NORTH HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES () — An off-duty Glendale firefighter was arrested Wednesday in connection to the murder of his wife in North Hollywood, authorities said.
Officers responded to a home in the 5600 block of Satsuma Avenue after a man went to a police station around 4 a.m. and requested a welfare check on his wife, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police say they found the victim, identified as 55-year-old Mayra Jimenez, bludgeoned inside the couple’s home. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
The city of Glendale sent 7 a statement, saying that the fire department was notified by LAPD that an off-duty member of the department had been detained in connection with the investigation.
“LAPD is the lead investigating agency and the matter is ongoing,” the city’s statement read.
The city of Glendale identified the suspect as 45-year-old firefighter-paramedic Andrew Jimenez, who has served with the Glendale Fire Department since April 28, 2008. He has been placed off duty and on administrative leave effective immediately, according to the city.
According to court records, he’s been booked into jail on suspicion of murder with a $2 million bail.
Detectives working the crime scene said they found Mayra Jimenez’s body with injuries from blunt force trauma inside the home. They said Andrew Jimenez, her husband, alerted police to the gruesome scene.
A statement from an attorney retained by Andrew Jimenez’s family appeared to suggest he found out his wife was having an affair.
“Our office is currently in contact with law enforcement regarding a diary of the decedent, apparently read moments before the homicide, that verified infidelity by the decedent,” the statement said.
Detectives say the tragedy appears to be an incident of domestic violence.
“From what we’ve determined, very preliminarily at this stage, this was an isolated incident of domestic violence between cohabitating adults,” LAPD Lt. Guy Golan said. “There’s no threat to public safety at this time. The individual who is in custody at Northeast Station, we believe, is responsible for the incident.”
Detectives were seen carrying out two large rifles from the scene.
Neighbor Camille Cabrera said she overheard detectives talking about the crime scene.
“I could just hear them talk about how horrific it was… it was just bloody. Next thing you know they found an axe. They said they found an axe,” she said.
Loved ones told Eyewitness News the couple had been married for more than 10 years. They said Mayra Jimenez was a teacher at Wilshire Park Elementary.
Friends say Mayra loved helping others – from teaching children to serving as a non-denominational ordained minister for weddings. They added that she was a huge Dodgers fan.
The incident remains under investigation.
