Massive fire erupts at commercial building in Vernon, forcing firefighters into defensive mode

VERNON, Calif. () — A three-alarm fire erupted at a sprawling commercial building in Vernon, forcing firefighters into “defensive mode” as the flames continued to burn more than an hour after the blaze began.

The fire began shortly before 3:30 p.m. at a structure in the 4600 block of Hampton Street, just southeast of the intersection of Pacific Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. Flames shot through the roof of the single-story building amid heavy smoke as firefighters arrived at the scene.

Firefighters on aerial ladders and on the ground attacked the flames with water from firehoses. The scene was about 4 miles southwest of the Lineage warehouse were a catastrophic fire broke out on June 17.

No injuries were reported, and the Fire Department was able to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

The firefight was ongoing as of 4:30 p.m., according to officials.

The cause of the fire was unknown.
