For over a decade, actor/director Alex Martinez has set forth a successful career in both acting and directing primarily in Florida due to his talent, combined with his dedication, persistence and talent.

At age 30, Martinez  has a promising career ahead of him in theater based on past positive reviews and comments from actors who have worked with him. Martinez is currently on stage starring as “King Arthur” in the musical “Camelot” at Wick Theatre in Boca Raton that is running through Sunday, April 19.

“Alex (Martinez) is very passionate about his work,” said “Camelot” co-star Allyson Rosenblum, who plays “Guenevre” in the musical.

“From day one in rehearsals, it was evident that Alex was extremely prepared and did his research by reading the book ‘The Once and Future King’ that ‘Camelot’ is based on,” added Rosenblum.

Theater critics, such as colleague Mindy Leaf in southfloridatheater.com , who reviewed Martinez’s acting in both “Camelot” and “Torch Song”,  praised Martinez’s abilities to become the characters he portrayed on stage.

“Martinez’s superbly emotional, conflicted and inadvertently often comical portrayal of ‘Arthur in ‘Camelot’immediately grabs our attention and lifts us up into his imaginary world”, wrote Leaf.

Although Martinez has starred as lead characters in 28 plays and was a director or assistant director in 12 plays, he was unsure as a younger man growing up in Chappaqua, NY (30 miles from New York City) whether he would make acting his career.

“The desire to act, to be on stage was there growing up as a teen, but I wasn’t always sure whether my path to a successful stage would work out,” said Martinez in a recent phone interview.

In fact, Martinez dropped out of university at age 21 in his then quest to pursue a degree in theater at Emerson College in Boston.

“I was concerned with two things that were foremost in my life. I had health issues that stopped me from working the long hours needed to be a good actor and I knew how expensive it was for my parents to send me to school. I made the decision to take care of myself before making my next move in my career.”

Martinez honed his skills both as an actor and director when he was hired to direct many productions in community theater productions in Vero Beach.

“Being hired as a director was the necessary break and opportunity to learn and get better in my field. Community actors work in other jobs, so they were inspired to work hard and it was a pleasure to direct in so many of these productions.”

Although Martinez never returned to Emerson College, he did return to school and earned an Associate of Arts degree in Dramatic Arts/Theater at Indian River State College in Ft. Pierce in 2020.

“I never looked back since working as a director in community theater and I have learned so much from the many directors I had and actors I had worked with since,” said Martinez.

Among his many achievements, Martinez has worked with multiple renowned directors directors in South Florida, such as Norb Joerder in both “Camelot” and “Fiddler On The Roof” at Wick Theatre, Ronnie Larson in “Torch Song” at Plays of Wilton in Wilton Manors and Jodie Langel in “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” at The Willow Theatre in Boca Raton.

“Through his performance as ‘Arthur’, Alex (Martinez) as well as the acting of his castmates and direction by Norb Joerder, the storytelling and music of ‘Camelot’ shone brightly on the stage,” said Marilynn Wick, Executive Director of Wick Theater.

Martinez’s future as both actor and director appears to shine brightly for him in the future.
