Many new crossover SUVs now available with extra off-road capability

LOS ANGELES () — Want to hit the dirt? That’s where a rugged 4×4 comes in.

You know, something like a Land Rover or Toyota’s 4Runner, where the name says it all. Then of course there’s the iconic Jeep Wrangler, which will certainly get the job done.

But don’t overlook a crossover SUV for this mission, especially the new trend of trim levels where leaving the pavement is part of the plan.

Subaru has had great success with its Wilderness line, including on the redesigned Forester for 2026.

More ground clearance, more aggressive tires, and a bit of styling flair to drive the point home, like copper-colored trim pieces inspired by rock climbing hardware.

The base price for the Forester Wilderness is $39,835.

You also can’t argue with the success of Toyota’s RAV4 — it sells in huge numbers.

Part of its 2026 redesign includes a new variation called Woodland. An extra bit of ruggedness for a vehicle most frequently seen on streets and highways, for a base MSRP of $41,350.

Over at Kia, the dirt-capable version of the Sportage is the X-Pro.

You guessed it – more capability when adventure calls. The Sportage also gets style points for looking the part.

The 2026 Sportage X-Pro Prestige has a base price of $41,035.

If you buy something like a Land Rover, you expect it to be a fully capable off-road vehicle.

The Defender OCTA, for example, is their new flagship, able to tackle anything off the pavement or on.

But other brands that may have figured out that if you can come up with an off-road sub-brand, it’s good for business.

Honda offers several of its models in the TrailSport version. Hyundai is rapidly expanding its XRT line and sibling brand Kia has X-Pro. Nissan’s rugged crossover trim is Rock Creek. Subaru’s Wilderness variant is now found on three models, and Toyota came up with Woodland.

Names that all serve to drive the point home.

Even some minivans are getting in on the act!

Toyota starting offering the Woodland trim on its Sienna a few years ago, and while Chrysler officially calls it a concept, they came up with a wild, lifted version of the Pacifica with off-road tires called Grizzly Peak.

Talk about a cool name!

Unfortunately, you can’t buy one – at least not yet, but stay tuned!

So lace up the hiking boots, pack the trail mix, and head out for adventure or feel free to just drive something that looks like it’s ready to leave the asphalt – even if you never do.
