Man shot outside Westfield Culver City mall days after AG Bondi’s comment on crime in the city sparked backlash from local leaders

CULVER CITY, Calif. () — At least one person was shot outside the Westfield Culver City mall Friday evening, police said.

The shooting was reported just before 8 p.m. at the 6000 block of Sepulveda Boulevard.

Culver City Police officers responded to the parking lot area of the mall where they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds.

He was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries, according to police.

The suspects fled, but police say officers have a perimeter and a search is ongoing in the areas adjacent to the mall.

People are being asked to avoid the area.

It is unclear what led up to the shooting. No further information was immediately available.

This comes after U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi’s comment about crime in Culver City sparked backlash from residents and local leaders.

During an exchange with California Rep. Sydney Kamlager-Dove, Culver City was brought up.

“Her district includes Culver City, and she’s not talking about any crime in her district, nothing about helping crime in her district,” Bondi said. “She’s not even worth getting into the details.”

The statement quickly spread online and prompted an amused – and baffled – reaction from people who live in the city.

For many locals, the idea that Culver City is a crime hot spot simply doesn’t match their experience.

Mayor Freddy Puza responded to Bondi’s statement in a post on Instagram and pointed out the declining crime rate in his city.

“The reality is crime has been down,” he said. “In 2024, it was down 9.7%, and in the third quarter of 2025, it was down another 6.1% compared to the same time period the previous year.”

This is a breaking news story. More details will be added as more information becomes available.
