HERMOSA BEACH, Calif. () — A 91-year-old man was found dead in Hermosa Beach after an hours-long standoff at a home right on the beach forced dozens to evacuate over the weekend. A suspect has been taken into custody.
It all unfolded Saturday when officers responded to the home on The Strand to conduct a welfare check, according to the Hermosa Beach Police Department. A neighbor reported a foul odor coming from the property and the person that lived there hadn’t been seen in days.
When officers arrived, they encountered a man inside who they say was not the tenant. That person refused to leave the home and indicated he was possibly armed.
That suspect, identified as 39-year-old Robert Simmons, barricaded himself in the home for about seven hours. Dozens of residents and tourists were forced to evacuate the area for the duration of the standoff.
Simmons eventually exited the home and was taken into custody.
When police searched the home, they discovered the dead victim, who has only been identified as a 91-year-old man.
The relationship between the suspect and victim is not clear, but detectives are investigated the situation as a homicide.
