LSU head football coach Lane Kiffin is ready to return to Ole Miss this weekend for the first time since his controversial exit, and security will be tight to ensure everyone’s safety.
Kiffin, 51, left Oxford, Mississippi for Baton Rouge in December 2025 after leading the Rebels to an 11-1 regular season. The team was preparing for its first College Football Playoff appearance in school history when the coach announced his unprecedented exit.
“I guess there’s real safety issues and stuff, so there’s people that have a plan for that, it is what it is,” Kiffin told reporters on Monday, September 14. “But I told the players today, you don’t have anything to worry about as far as attention on you all week. There’s so much attention and hatred on me, you just get to go play.”
Kiffin’s Tigers will face the Rebels on Saturday, September 19, in a nationally televised matchup featuring the two top-10 teams.
“I think it is unusual, one team you built and now a new team you’re building,” Kiffin continued. “Probably an unusual situation that way, but I know a lot’s going to be made about me, but this is about the players preparing really well and playing really well. [Ole Miss coach Pete Golding’s] not going to tackle anybody, and I’m not going to throw any touchdowns.”
He added, “This is the first SEC game and both teams are 2-0. And we’ve got to prepare really well, it won’t be about all the other stuff.”
While Kiffin might try to keep the conversation on the game itself, fans will undoubtedly have their own thoughts. The way Kiffin departed Oxford left Ole Miss players and fans furious with the veteran head coach — so much so that Kiffin even alleged one fan tried to run him off the road before he left town.
With more than 64,000 fans expected at Vaught–Hemingway Stadium, Oxford police will have an increased presence on gameday. That includes 19 officers on horseback with mounted patrol units from Mobile, AL. and New Orleans in town to help.
“The safety of our campus community and visitors is always a priority,” Daniel Sanford, director of Ole Miss University Police and Campus Safety, said in a statement to The Athletic. “While we cannot share specific security measures for safety reasons, University Police are working closely with local and state law enforcement partners to provide a safe and secure game-day environment.”
He added, “We encourage everyone to allow plenty of time to navigate campus and to follow directions from law enforcement and game-day personnel.”
