LOS ANGELES () — Los Angeles City Controller Kenneth Mejia has issued a subpoena seeking financial records from LA28 after the organization allegedly failed to provide documents he requested in August, according to Mejia.
Mejia said the records he is seeking include bank statements, venue budgets and the identities of contractors receiving money from LA28, the private nonprofit organization responsible for hosting the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He said LA28 is contractually obligated to provide those documents to his office.
The controller says access to the records is important because Los Angeles taxpayers could be responsible for costs if the Summer Olympics exceed their budget.
“This is unacceptable. This is in the agreement. L.A. taxpayers are financially liable for unlimited amounts of money. If the Olympics goes over budget, we deserve to know how we’re doing financially leading up to the Olympics. So that’s why we issued the subpoena,” Mejia said.
In a statement, LA28 said it had not yet received the subpoena.
“At a moment when every day counts, we are disappointed to see the City pulling away time, resources, and attention from the work that matters most: making sure Los Angeles is fully ready to harness this once-in-a-generation opportunity…” the organization said, in part.
After receiving the statement, Eyewitness News asked why LA28 would be disappointed by the controller’s request to review the records. A response had not been received at the time of publishing.
The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office told 7 On Your Side that it supports Mejia’s efforts and believes taxpayers deserve transparency.
Mejia said LA28 is currently under budget. However, he said costs have historically increased as the Olympic Games draw closer, which he cited as another reason for seeking the financial documents now.
