ALTADENA, Calif. () — Los Angeles County authorities are renewing their call for information in the killing of a 4-year-old Altadena boy, 10 years after he was fatally struck by a stray bullet.
Salvador Esparza was struck by a stray bullet on July 5, 2016, and later died. Investigators said someone was being chased through the family’s yard when gunshots were fired. Salvador was standing in the doorway of his home when he was hit.
The boy’s grandmother, Juana Esparza, said the loss continues to affect the family.
“My grandson was taken away from us, and it’s been really hard on us,” she said. “Every single day I pray.”
Despite a decade-long investigation, no arrest has been made in the case. The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department is now asking the public to come forward with any information that could help identify the person responsible.
County officials are also offering an $85,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of those responsible for Salvador’s death.
“We believe someone knows who pulled the trigger,” L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna said. “Someone knows who was involved. Someone knows the truth, and today we are asking those individuals to step up to the plate and do the right thing.”
According to the Sheriff’s Department, investigators have received valuable information over the past 10 years, but it has not been enough to lead to an arrest. Authorities say details that may seem insignificant could provide the breakthrough needed in the case.
“Even the smallest piece of information could be the missing link investigators need to identify those that are responsible for this murder,” County Supervisor Kathryn Barger said.
Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. Authorities said the reward remains available even for those who choose to provide information anonymously.
