In one of Kendra Duggar’s prison calls with husband Joseph Duggar, she opened up about her personal struggles.
“I was anxious to pick up the phone,” Kendra, 27, told Joseph, 31, in jail audio obtained by Page Six, noting her anxiety is “on a whole other level.”
She continued, “At one moment I could be fine, and the next minute I could be, you know, absolutely beside myself. I didn’t know what to do or what to say or what to talk about. I was kind of just spiraling downhill and thankfully [your mom, Michelle Duggar] brought food up to me and stopped me and prayed with me and stuff.”
Kendra also noted that she was struggling to “be by [herself]” for long periods of time.
Joseph was arrested in Arkansas on March 18 for unlawful sexual activity with a minor after being accused of allegedly molesting a 9-year-old girl in Florida in 2020. The victim, now 14, told police that Joseph “eventually apologized for his actions” at the time before “the incidents stopped.”
Two days later, news broke that Joseph was also facing four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor, second-degree, and four counts of second-degree false imprisonment. Kendra was arrested on the same charges and released within hours on bond. (A spokesperson for the Duggar family confirmed to Us at the time that the child endangerment charges are unrelated to Joseph’s alleged sexual misconduct case.)
Joseph, who shares four children with Kendra, was held in custody at the Washington County Sheriff’s Office for nearly two weeks while awaiting extradition to Florida. During his incarceration, he spoke with Kendra on the phone on multiple occasions.
“I focus on my Bible reading,” Joseph told his wife in another March call obtained by Us Weekly. “It’s actually been really encouraging, because they have, like, little things below it that kind of either describe it or just give a different perspective of it, of a verse. It’s been really good.”
The Counting On alum further noted that he was “praying” for Kendra and his family. (Kendra does not presently have custody of their children.)
“It’s a lot to deal with,” Joseph said. “I’ll continue to pray that things will settle and people will all be good there.”
Joseph advised Kendra to find solace in her faith.
“I think that we’re gonna realize how much we need [God]. I think it’s a good place to be. Being dependent on God’s always a good thing,” he said during the call. “That’s just what I want to encourage you about is to keep remembering that we can depend on God. Even if it’s bad things that come our way, God’s going to keep us right where he wants us, and when you know, right now, it’s probably hard to hear his voice.”
Joseph added, “The more that we put our efforts toward [God], I think he’s going to come through for us. I think that’s one of the promises I’m holding too. God’s gonna be there. I know things are wild and crazy, but you can just remember that in the back of your head.”
Joseph pleaded not guilty after being extradited to Florida late last month. He was released from custody on a $600,000 bond.
