LOS ANGELES () — A Los Feliz family is leaning on community support after their 9-year-old son, who has Down syndrome and autism, lost one of his main sources of independence when his adaptive tricycle was stolen.
Jack Field, who loves Disneyland, listening to the band KISS, and riding his bike, relied on the specially made tricycle for mobility and confidence, his parents said.
“You see the pride when he’s on it,” said the boy’s father, Bobby Field. “He’s like, ‘Look at me!'”
“He waves to everybody, he’s part of the community, everyone’s like ‘Nice bike,’ and you can see he’s so proud,” the father added.
The bike was recently stolen, so Jack’s mom Marie posted about it on a Los Feliz Facebook page, hoping neighbors might keep a lookout.
“I wasn’t emotional. I was just like, ‘Hey, this happened, and just keep an eye out,'” she said.
Local realtor Anne Reiman saw the post and created a GoFundMe campaign to help replace Jack’s tricycle. More than 100 people have donated so far, raising over $9,000.
“Something like this, it just really gives you faith in humanity,” said Bobby. “You keep seeing ‘anonymous,’ ‘anonymous.’ Like, it’s really cool that people care.”
The family is now working to order a new bike for Jack, and they say it’s all thanks to every person who donated.
“It’s a life-changing thing for him to be outside and be with his family,” said Bobby.
“Just thank you – thank you to everyone. It’s just so heartwarming,” added Marie.
