I earn $30K a year just to scoop dog poop — my clients are accused of being ‘lazy,’ but they truly need my help

I earn K a year just to scoop dog poop — my clients are accused of being ‘lazy,’ but they truly need my help

He’s turning s–t into gold.

A UK dad of four is turning doo into dough by picking up dog poop — a side hustle that he estimates nets him over $32,000 per year.

“We were stunned, the customers just started rolling in,” Kyle Newby, 39, told South West News Service of his odiferous gig.

“I can be driving for around four hours in a day and can spend nearly three hours picking,” said Newby. Tom Maddick / SWNS

The Derbyshire-based builder said he was inspired to start the business, dubbed Pet Poo Pick, in March after “looking on Instagram” at work and seeing “how popular dog poo picking” was in the U.S.

“It’s really big in America, so we thought we’d give it a whirl and bring it to the East Midlands,” recalled the Brit. “We’ve only seen a few people doing it in the UK, so we went on Facebook and posted an advert and left it for a while.”

Sure enough, his post sparked a crapton of interest, and the professional pooper scooper now has a base of 35 regular customers.

“I do 15 customers on a Wednesday, 20 on a Saturday,” said Newby, who charges $40 for the initial visit and $20 per week afterward.

As a result, the Brit estimates that he earns around $2,680 per week moonlighting as a manure cleaner, which equates to nearly $60 per hour.

Newby estimates that he can earn more picking up mutt mess than he can at a 10-hour shift of construction — although the job, as one can imagine, can be quite dirty.

“When you think about it, you’re roughly picking up 14 pieces of poo per garden,” Newby said. “We use a scooper and a bag. It takes 10-15 mins per garden.”

After shoveling the mutt manure, the excrement scourer disinfects the area to ensure there’s no trace left.

“I can be driving for around four hours a day and can spend nearly three hours picking,” said Newby, who’s driven as far as 50 miles to dispose of dog poop.

Newby claimed he’s received comments from trolls claiming humans are now too “lazy” to clean up after their pet. However, he estimates that over half of his consumer base is too old or infirm to be “on-doody.”

“A lot are on crutches, so it’s hard for them to pick this poo up. We do this to help them,” said the Brit. “For those moaning, say if their mum was disabled and they can’t pick up the poo, I’d be ideal as they’d need our services then.”

He even offers a mowing service for those who can’t do it themselves.

Customer Peter Fisk, 48, has been using Pet Poo Pick since December after a broken leg rendered him unable to pick up after his pooch.

“With the way my leg is, I’ll be using him for the rest of the year at least,” he said. “Seeing him get the hose out after and doing it properly just proves he does a great service.”

Currently, Newby works around 12 hours a week spread over days, but hopes to make his poo-crative business more permanent.

“At the minute, it’s a side job, but it’s getting it all out there,” he said.

Customers across the pond in NYC are in dire need of a “number two” guy.

In 2025, Washington Heights was named the most poop-plagued ZIP code in the U.S., producing 160 of the more than 1,600 complaints filed since the start of the year.
