SEAL BEACH, Calif. () — If you are thinking about heading to the beach, you might want to reconsider — along with big waves, Hurricane Polo could bring dangerous rip currents, flooding and more erosion to Southern California.
High sand berms line up the shoreline, protecting homes in Seal Beach as residents there prepare for another storm heading their way.
Although SoCal shores will not get hit directly by Hurricane Polo, heading towards Mexico, its impact will still be felt in our region, especially at south-facing beaches. Those areas could see waves up to 7 feet tall or higher in the coming days.
Flooding, high surf and dangerous rip currents are expected, along with seeing more beach erosion.
Residents preparing for the upcoming storm are hoping the built-up sand berms and other preparations make a difference this time around.
“I think they’re gonna hold, because we weren’t prepared, I don’t think Seal Beach was prepared for the last one,” said area resident Susana Villalon.
“If you go down to Aliso Creek Beach, you can see how much the sand disappeared,” said Laguna Beach resident Trish Sweeney. “And we lost quit a bit of sand over the years…shown how much damage it is.”
The peninsula in Long Beach, another community hit hard by the effects of Hurricane Marie over Labor Day weekend, has been closed for public safety and residents were urged to stay off sand berms and avoid areas where heavy equipment is operating.
City officials were urging residents to prepare for high tides, large swells and possible coastal flooding from swells generated by Hurricane Polo, with the greatest flooding risk expected Monday and Tuesday.
The Long Beach City Council ratified a proclamation of a local emergency so they can activate the resources they need to head ahead of this storm.
Local fire departments are also on high alert. Ready-to-fill sandbags are available at all Los Angeles Fire Department neighborhood fire stations — up to 25 bags per household.
A beach hazard statement is going to be in effect through Wednesday.
