Hundreds get stuck at high elevation after malfunction on Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. () — The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is back up and running after hundreds of people got stranded at the top on Friday.

The tramway reportedly malfunctioned around 8 p.m., leaving people stranded on the mountain at an elevation of a bout 7,500 feet for hours.

One person who was there told Eyewitness News that some people started getting sick due to the elevation.

Crews were able to start bringing people back down at a slow speed after midnight. The last tram car made it to the bottom around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday.

“On the way up, it goes up in about 10 minutes, over 2.5 miles, 2 miles. On the way down, they still had equipment issues. The car would stop, and it would slow down significantly. I want to say it took about 25, 30 minutes to get back down,” said Nima Navidi, one of the people who got stuck. “I just want them to have a plan at the very least.”

People were given free food and drinks, blankets and coloring books for the kids.

The tramway remained closed for all of Saturday but reopened for normal operations on Sunday.
