Hilary Swank is going to be a mom of three.

The Oscar-winning actress, 52, announced Wednesday that she is expecting her third child with husband Philip Schneider.

Swank shared the news in an Instagram video showing the couple and their 3-year-old twins, Aya and Ohm, dancing in the dark with glow sticks attached to their bodies.

The video also reveals Swank’s growing belly, with a tiny baby shape outlined in glow sticks inside.

“A lot of people have been asking what project I’m doing next, this one releases in December,” she captioned the video, appearing to hint at her due date.

News has reached out to Swank’s representatives for additional comment.

Swank and Schneider, who married in 2018, welcomed their twins in April 2023, when the actress was 48.

“It wasn’t easy. But boy (and girl!) was it worth it,” Swank wrote on Instagram at the time, alongside a photo of herself holding the newborns.

Swank first announced her pregnancy with the twins on “Good Morning America” in October 2022.

“I’m going to be a mom — and not just of one, but of two,” she said at the time. “I can’t believe it.”

The actress has since spoken openly about becoming a mother later in life, and embracing the changes that come with motherhood.

“For me, it’s not about bouncing back to our pre-baby bodies but rather bouncing forward into our new bodies and selves,” she told Women’s Health last year.

What it means to have a ‘geriatric pregnancy’

Swank’s pregnancy comes as more women in the U.S. are having children later in life.

In 2025, birth rates increased for women ages 30 to 44, while rates declined for women in their 20s, compared with the previous year, according to provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Pregnancy at age 35 or older is medically referred to as “advanced maternal age,” rather than the more colloquial term “geriatric pregnancy,” according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

The age of 35 was established decades ago as a benchmark to determine which pregnant women should undergo amniocentesis, a prenatal test used to detect certain genetic conditions, Dr. Shilpi Mehta-Lee, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at NYU Langone, previously told News.

While the cutoff is not absolute, pregnancy risks generally increase with age, particularly after 40, according to ACOG.

“It is a bit of an arbitrary cutoff, but at the same time we do understand that aging does affect pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes,” Mehta-Lee told News. “And there are more risks even after you get over the age of 40.”

Women who become pregnant later in life face increased risks of complications, including gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, miscarriage and preterm birth, research shows.

With the increased risks comes more monitoring during pregnancy for women in their mid-30s and above. Typically, women of advanced maternal age are screened for chromosomal abnormalities and have more ultrasounds throughout their pregnancy and more frequent doctor’s visits and testing as their due date approaches, as compared to younger women.

“When someone is over 35, her doctor is going to look for things a little bit more, just to make sure things are going well,” Mehta-Lee said. “It offers an opportunity for the doctor to look one more time, to think about it one more time, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing.”
