Gulf airlines change loyalty requirements as Iran war impacts flights

The Iran war has had extensive impacts on both global tourism and aviation.

The conflict is reportedly costing the Middle East travel and tourism industry €515 million a day, while the curtailed supply of oil from the region has seen jet fuel prices spiking, translating into higher airfares for passengers.

Now, two major Gulf airlines have modified their loyalty programme requirements reflecting the reduction in air travel – and possibly signalling preparation for long-term consequences of the war.

Etihad reduces air miles requirements

This week, Etihad announced an adjustment in its loyalty programme requirements. All tier qualifications for Etihad Guest members have been reduced by 25%, allowing customers to retain their current status or move to the next tier with fewer miles than previously required.

The airline has confirmed that members do not need to register or take any additional action for the change to apply.

Members can retain their current status with the reduced tier miles within their existing 12-month qualification period and achieve each new tier status with the reduced qualifications until 31 March 2027.

“The change recognises that many members have experienced disruptions to their travel plans in recent weeks and provides greater flexibility for members working towards retaining or upgrading their tier status,” Etihad said in a press release.

Qatar Airways extends member tier status

Qatar Airways has also contacted Privilege Club members directly via email, communicating changes to the loyalty programme.

The carrier said it is “implementing tier status extensions for all members whose status was due to be renewed and may have been affected during this period, allowing them to continue enjoying the benefits they love”.

It added that it will be contacting members who are eligible for this extension by email with more details in the coming days.

The Doha-based airline also said that it was working to resolve all open bookings, refund requests and complaints.
