ANGELINO HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES () — From afar, the home of Sydney Wayser and her husband Isaac Watters in Angelino Heights is like any other in the neighborhood.
However, a closer look reveals one of the newest and most unique coffee shops in Los Angeles.
“We really thought that nobody would come, and it was slightly a weird concept that people would either be into or not, and everyone is really excited about it, which has been exciting for us,” said Wayser.
The couple opened Granada less than two weeks ago.
Since then, the home coffee shop has become a hot spot for locals.
“We kind of have the perfect space for it the way that our house is,” explained Watters. “Public space on the ground floor, private space upstairs, it makes it really easy to get people in here and doesn’t feel just like walking into a normal house.”
Granada is permitted to operate like a restaurant from the couple’s private kitchen through the L.A. County Department of Public Health’s Microenterprise Home Kitchen Operation program, also known as MEHKO.
“They sent out an inspector to help us walk through everything that we need to get the kitchen up to code,” said Watters.
MEHKOs are limited in the number of meals that can be served per week and how much revenue they can make a year.
So far, word of mouth has kept Granada busy.
Customer Angie Bandari said it’s fun and Daniel Everett thinks it’s quite impressive.
“I think it definitely seems a little more cozy and homey then we’re used to,” he said.
“I think if you’re just looking for a place that’s not just a place for you to be in your own world and have an opportunity to actually feel like a human with other people, this is such a good place to do that,” said Bee Gilmore.
Arielle Egozi said it feels like you’re being literally invited into someone’s house. Wayser and Watters wanted to create a space that’s welcoming to all and are glad their vision has come to life.
“Really, the reward is not really the money. It’s more just the connections that we’re making,” said Watters.
The couple encourages other small business owners to apply for a MEHKO permit.
Granada is only open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. while the couple’s daughter is at school.
