GLENDALE, Calif. () — Seven people were hospitalized as a precaution after a fire tore through an assisted living facility in Glendale on Friday, gutting the home and displacing its residents.
Dramatic video from the scene showed neighbors and first responders helping evacuate elderly residents from the house as flames and heavy smoke engulfed the building.
The fire broke out shortly before 5 p.m. near Mountain Street and Allen Avenue. Firefighters said two nurses and six elderly patients were inside the home when the fire started.
Among those who responded were neighbors Alex Bazinyan and his teenage brother, Narek Bazinyan.
“We saw the nurse coming out of the house and she was yelling for help, and then after that we just ran inside,” Alex Bazinyan said.
“I see a bunch of old people on the ground. I started carrying people out one by one,” he added.
Firefighters extinguished the blaze, but the home sustained extensive damage. AIR7 video showed smoke and flames had partially collapsed the roof.
Arson investigators are now looking into how the fire started.
State records show all the smoke detectors at the six-bedroom, four-bath home were working properly when it passed inspection in March.
Seven people, including a neighbor, were taken to a hospital as a precaution. All are expected to recover.
“If you can help, that’s the first thing you should do. Just always help,” Narek Bazinyan said.
The fire department is working with organizations to help the displaced victims find another place to stay. The home was destroyed in the fire.
