The “main character” trend is nudging homeowners away from mass-produced, showroom-perfect rooms and toward spaces that feel like autobiographies. Writing for Real Simple, Laura Millar frames the movement as one that “encourages homeowners to incorporate decor pieces that serve as an extension of their own personal style and make them feel like the main character of their homes (and of their lives).”
Statement lighting, collections of artwork and vintage finds with a story are all ways people are getting in on the trend and creating spaces that feel uniquely theirs, according to Millar. She notes there are no hard-and-fast rules for getting started, since the whole point is to build a space that couldn’t be replicated by anyone else.
How to Bring ‘Main Character’ Energy Into Your Space
The look rewards specificity over polish. Principal and creative director of French & French Interiors, Heather French, tells Millar that oversized art can carry a room on its own.
“Don’t underestimate the power of bold artwork. An oversized canvas, an unexpected print, or even a gallery wall that reflects a specific obsession or era tells a story no mass-produced decor ever could. It’s one of the most personal moves you can make in a space,” French says.
Beyond artwork, Millar suggests a few other moves for anyone easing into the look.
- Use statement lighting as a sculptural focal point, not just a fixture.
- Display things you actually love, from coffee-table books and travel finds to framed photos, records, ceramics and collected objects that keep a room from feeling like a showroom.
- Bring in flowers or greenery.
- Mix up your walls.

That last layer is often the one homeowners overlook. Sarah Lyon, writing for The Spruce, points to wallpaper, paneling and paint as the tools transforming rooms from generic to intentional.
Austin, Texas-based designer Heidi Houdek tells Lyon that “wall treatments are one of those details that instantly make a home feel more cozy and intentional.”
“White walls absolutely have their place, but adding even one thoughtful layer can be the difference between a room that feels just okay and one that feels truly beautiful,” Houdek says.
