Fed up Miami hotels go to drastic lengths to clean up bloody BBL patients’ recovery rooms

Getting a Brazilian butt lift in Miami? Your hotel might want a little extra padding — for its incidental deposit.

As plastic surgery tourists descend on the Magic City in search of bigger backsides, some hotels are taking precautions against an unwelcome side effect: bloodstained sheets, soiled mattresses and expensive cleanup bills.

One traveler was stunned by a $600 incidental deposit at a Miami hotel, only to be told the hefty hold was apparently thanks to plastic surgery patients leaving behind bloody messes.

“People get BBL next door and spill blood and guts all over our rooms; we need protection,” the receptionist allegedly told the traveler, according to a post on X.

And some recovering patients say they’ve been slapped with surprise deposits of their own.

In January, a guest at Candlewood Suites Miami Lakes claimed staff demanded an additional $500 after learning she was recovering from surgery — despite already paying the standard $100 deposit.

“Instead of accommodating me, staff told me the manager required an additional $500 deposit because I was post-op,” she wrote in an online review, alleging housekeeping was withheld even after staff confirmed her sheets were blood-free.

Meanwhile, a July reviewer of a Miami Airbnb claimed her host demanded an unexpected $100 deposit for potentially bloodstained linens — and threatened to cancel her reservation if she refused.

The kicker? The rental advertises its proximity to more than a dozen plastic surgery clinics and offers discounted transportation with reclining seats for post-op patients.

Its listing now explicitly requires a $100 refundable deposit for surgical guests.

Some hotels aren’t leaving anything to chance.

Kompose Boutique Hotel Miami Airport has a “Medical Recovery Policy” prohibiting recovery activities and medical waste disposal in guest rooms, as well as visible bandages, drains and surgical garments in common areas.

Violators could face additional cleaning or biohazard remediation fees, according to its published terms.

But the issue isn’t unique to Miami.

In Beverly Hills, another cosmetic surgery hotspot, luxury aftercare companies arrange hotel stays with private nurses, recovery equipment and round-the-clock assistance.

Tom Bugansky, founder of Prestige Surgical Aftercare, which operated out of the swanky SLS Hotel on Rodeo Drive from 2021 to 2023, told The Post he’s seen firsthand the mess post-op patients can leave behind.

“When someone comes out of surgery, let’s say it’s a BBL, they’re gonna leak; we’re injecting 4-5 liters of fluid and then we’re sucking it out, but whatever else is still in their body is gonna drain out gradually where they lay,” Bugansky said. “Some doctors don’t stitch them on purpose so they can leak out.”

He recalled one incident where hotel housekeeping staff shared photos of rooms where two patients recovering from liposuction and body-contouring procedures had left sheets, pillows, comforters and towels soaked with blood and surgical drainage.

“The sheets get bloody. There’s no way around it,” Bugansky said, adding that he has implemented preventative measures like wrapping mattresses and pillows with protective absorbent pads and buying his own linens.

Bugansky said he understands why hotels are trying to protect themselves financially.

“If someone’s booking a room for $200 or $300 and then they bloody up the place, the hotel has to eat it,” he said. “The hotels can’t cheap out either; they’re buying high-end Egyptian thread count linens.”

It’s exactly why post-surgical recovery houses exist.

Unlike traditional hotels, these specialized facilities are designed to accommodate patients recovering from procedures such as BBLs and liposuction and can make proper arrangements for medical waste disposal.

Bugansky, who eventually moved his operation out of the SLS and into a residential high-rise, said managing post-op patients required precautions far beyond ordinary hotel housekeeping.

Unlike ordinary hotels, specialized recovery accommodations may provide trained caregivers, protective bedding, assistance with drains and arrangements for medical waste disposal.

“The recovery bed is just as bad as the operating bed,” he said.

Still, plastic surgeons argue there’s a difference between ordinary postoperative recovery and outright property damage.

Dr. Nirmal Nathan, a Miami-based board-certified plastic surgeon, said some drainage or minor bleeding is expected after procedures such as liposuction, tummy tucks and body contouring.

“While hotels certainly have the right to protect their property, I believe there needs to be a reasonable distinction between normal postoperative recovery and excessive damage,” Nathan said.

“Patients should not automatically face substantial incidental charges for something that is a predictable part of the healing process.”

Nathan recommends checking accommodation policies before booking — particularly regarding post-surgical deposits, cleaning fees and damaged linens.

Patients should also confirm whether recovery is permitted, arrange appropriate medical supervision and use protective bedding when drainage is expected.

After all, the last thing anyone wants after spending thousands on a new body is another hefty bill for leaving a little too much behind.
