Hulu’s latest true crime docuseries, “Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel,” tells the intriguing story of a murder-for-hire case, where a tangled web of suspects points to those you’d least expect.
Dan Markel was a prominent law professor, whose brutal death involved a messy divorce and murderous ex-in-laws.
On The Red Carpet spoke to the producers behind the four-part series, uncovering the unique family dynamics, motives and mindsets of the key players in the case.
Executive producer Dov Freedman tells us, “On face value, there’s quite a lot of relatable aspects to this story, people falling in love and out of love, people not getting on with their in-laws, but then obviously there’s an extraordinary set of circumstances here and a set of people who thought they could quite literally get away with murder.”
“Donna Adelson is the mother of Rob, Charlie and Wendi,” producer Lily Fletcher explained. “She’s quite a sort of domineering mother. She encourages her kids a lot in their educational lives, in their marital lives. And Donna essentially wanted to do parenthood again with her grandkids. Like, she wanted 24-hour access to them. And Dan was blocking that.”
Dan Markel married Wendi Adelson in 2006, and they had two sons. The couple divorced in 2013, resulting in a nasty custody battle.
Wendi Adelson wanted to move with their kids closer to her parents in south Florida, but Markel disagreed, and the courts sided with him.
“Donna was very threatened by Dan. In the case of what happened to her son-in-law, she took that to the extremity,” said Freedman.
Despite being conspirators in a murder, “They really just, they think that they’re above the law, and I think that that, for me, was really shocking,” said Fletcher of the Adelson family.
It took 11 years for the case to be solved.
The series tells the definitive story of Markel’s murder, with exclusive interviews from FBI agent Pat Sanford and the ex-girlfriend of Charlie Adelson.
