PHOENIX () — Tense moments unfolded in an Arizona courtroom when a murder victim’s father-in-law lunged at the convicted killer, hitting him multiple times before bystanders intervened.
The incident played out on Wednesday at a sentencing hearing for defendant Abel Uribe, who pleaded guilty to shooting and killing David Navidad-Parra, an Army captain on military leave during a private vehicle sale in 2022.
Family members spoke in remembrance of Navidad-Parra during the hearing, including his wife’s father, who says he attacked the killer because he saw him laughing and snickering from the podium.
The father-in-law was then arrested, booked on charges including aggravated assault, and hours later appeared in court himself.
“He was very emotional and came back and saw that the defendant who was there to be sentenced was laughing… and he lost it,” said Christian Lueders, attorney for the Navidad-Parra family.
Once proceedings resumed, the convicted killer apologized to the victim’s family. Under a plea deal, he was sentenced to life in prison and will be eligible for parole after 25 years.
