Nothing says bragging rights like snorkeling in coral-fringed waters off the coast of Tanzania’s Mafia Island as a constellation of whale sharks the length of standard school buses cruise by. And nothing impresses like a hike up a crater to float alongside thousands of stingless golden jellyfish in one of South Raja Ampat’s hidden marine lakes.
This is the new frontier of experiential expedition cruising aimed at a growing subset of seasoned, price-insensitive travelers who’ve already conquered Antarctica and the Galápagos.
For these glitzy globe trotters, the ultimate flex isn’t another five-star resort holiday, it’s unrivaled access to unmarked anchorages, isolated islands, and some of the most inaccessible communities — places no one in their social circle has ever visited or even heard of.
“Experiential travel, to be honest, stems from Africa,” Aqua Expeditions CEO and Founder Francesco Galli Zugaro tells The Post.
A pioneer in luxury expedition cruising, Aqua Expeditions’ newest ice-class superyacht, Aqua Lares, sails between the Eastern Coast of Africa (from $18,350) and the Arctic, taking just 30 guests at a time to destinations otherwise inaccessible to larger ships.
Among the highlights of one of its most coveted itineraries is a stop at the Aldabra Atoll, a UNESCO World Heritage Site some 600 miles southwest of the Seychelles that less than a handful of operators are even permitted to visit.
“Aldabra is the Galápagos of East Africa: where the Galápagos has 15,000 to 20,000 giant tortoises and 30,000 people living there, Aldabra has six rangers and 150,000 giant tortoises,” Zugaro said.
If Aldabra is East Africa’s answer to the Galápagos, Aqua’s South Raja Ampat itinerary offers an entirely different kind of wonder. An archipelago of 1,500 islands comprised of towering limestone karsts jutting out from electric-blue lagoons along with some of the most biodiverse coral reefs on the planet, this itinerary is certainly not for the spineless.
A guest favorite on this sailing experience is the sunrise hike into an ancient crater that leads to a secluded lake where tens of thousands of stingless jellyfish drift toward the surface, transforming an otherwise ordinary snorkel into an otherworldly opportunity.
“I coin our travelers ‘affluent explorers,’ it describes the mindset of someone who’s been everywhere and done everything, but has an innate sense of adventure — and wants to do it without sacrificing creature comforts.”
Venture farther east into the Banda Sea, intrepid travelers have the chance to visit the volcanic island of Manuk, better known as Snake Island — where you can snorkel through underwater sulfur vents surrounded by hundreds of thousands of docile, yet highly venomous, sea snakes.
“Raja Ampat is the Holy Grail of snorkeling,” Zugaro said. “Unlike larger cruise ships that require deep docks, marinas, or port infrastructure to unload garbage and resupply food for hundreds of passengers, small expedition vessels can drop anchor in remote bays and shuttle guests ashore via zodiacs in some of the most exotic destinations on earth without even leaving a footprint.”
Halfway across the Pacific, this same ethos of pushing the boundaries and venturing beyond traditional cruise routes is leading travelers to another little-known island that’s been rewriting the tried-and-tested, fly-and-flop French Polynesia playbook. While most travelers who head to this part of the world flock to Bora Bora and Tahiti, Makatea in the northwestern part of the Tuamotus remains one of the region’s most extraordinary and least-visited locales.
“One of the most rewarding parts of expedition travel is discovering that some of the world’s most extraordinary places are often the ones you’ve never heard of, and a great example is our new expeditions in French Polynesia,” said Chief Expedition Officer for Lindblad Expeditions Trey Byus.
Known for its soaring limestone cliffs, hidden caves, and swimmable grottoes filled with stalactites, one of the only expedition cruises to call here is National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions’ new Society Islands and Tuamotus itinerary (from $16,560 per person). It’s a stand-out experience — if you’re keen on paddleboards.
“I think what really makes a place feel unexplored is the opportunity to experience it through the people and the environment that defines it,” Byus said. “We’re looking for places where wildlife, culture and natural history come together in a way that creates genuine discovery rather than simply checking another destination off a list.”

Nowhere is the idea of “following the wild” taken more literally than in Greenland’s Scoresby Sund. One of the largest and least-visited fjord systems in the world, Selar, a new ultra-luxury expedition line will launch its signature Untamed Greenland voyage (from $18,225 per person) aboard the 230-foot ship Captain Arctic next year.
A near-zero-emission polar expedition ship, the itinerary has no fixed route and goes with the ice floes. That allows for shifting ice and changing weather conditions, while giving its maximum-capacity of 36 guests wilder wildlife encounters and an emotional connection to their surroundings.
“The Arctic and the polar regions are not about a bucket list, it’s the contrary,” said Selar founder and CEO Sophie Galvagnon, the youngest woman to be decorated with the French Order of Maritime Merit. “It’s about an immersive experience, reconnecting with yourself, reconnecting with nature. To do that, you have to slow down and be guided by nature.”
Also the first woman to command a commercial polar expedition ship, Galvagnon believes Selar is reimagining what expedition cruising should be. Powered entirely by wind and solar via 115-foot-high sails shaped like giant airplane wings and clad with 20,000 solar panels, Galvagnon says this next-gen ship will be a blueprint for exploring the planet’s most remote places with a dramatically lighter environmental footprint — proving that reaching the ends of the Earth doesn’t have to come at its expense.
“We truly are trying to achieve a radically different model,” she said. “It starts with the ship, of course, but it’s not only about that — it’s about something much more global. We want to prove that we can be better, and it’s our responsibility as a leader in this industry to shift to a more respectful model across all of our operations.”
Threading its way through a labyrinth of deep fjords, where sea ice seals off the waterways for much of the year and nautical charts remain notoriously unreliable, guests will have the opportunity to visit remote East Greenlandic Inuit communities, track polar bears by Zodiac, and paddleboard and kayak amongst the region’s famous cathedral icebergs in one of the planet’s last true wildernesses.
“Luxury today is experiential luxury — it’s about non-duplicable experiences, personalization, and creating lifetime memories,” Galvagnon said. “If you want to eat caviar, maybe we’re not the best place, but if you want to assist the captain and see how they’re planning ice navigation, receive an invitation to attend a murder mystery party on board, or enjoy local Arctic sushi, caught that day and prepared right in front of you, then this is the place to be.”
