Exclusive | Smashing pumpkins: Influencer ruffles feathers for serving mushed-up pumpkin pie from refrigerator drawer

She gave them pumpkin to talk about.

Content creator Kate Heintzelman went viral for her preposterous method of serving pumpkin pie — mushed up and from her refrigerator drawer — and critics thought she was out of her bird, calling the hack “gross,” “pure nastiness” and “wrong on so many levels.”

In the clip, which got close to 5 million views combined on her Instagram and TikTok handle @katewilltryanything, the Minnesotan smashes four pumpkin pies inside of her refrigerator drawer, mushes them all up with her hands, douses the concoction with an entire can of whipped cream, mushes that up again, and then uses a scooper to serve herself a portion.

Heintzelman, 33, told The Post she got the idea for the “crazy concept” after her other fridge drawer posts — with seven-layer salsa and spaghetti and meatballs — both went viral.

“I had put other stuff in the fridge before for easy convenience,” she explained. “And I thought, ‘What about a pumpkin pie?’ Because I feel like everybody’s cooking all day long. And if you could just have the pumpkin pie in the fridge already ready, that seems easy.”

The former high school social studies teacher, who launched @katewilltryanything during the pandemic, said that for the out-of-the-box recipe she purchased four pumpkin pies and a can of whipped cream from Costco.

One of the first scathing comments on her post — which more than 3,000 agreed with by “liking” it — said, “It’s really sickening to see all this food waste in these critical times when people are literally starving.”

“I always think those 0 are interesting because you’re like, ‘Okay, well, in the grand scheme of things, they’re like $5 each maybe,’” Heintzelman pointed out.

“And I always think, like, ‘Well, how much money do you guys give to the poor?’ I donate money to food shelters.”

People also criticized her use of the fridge drawer, saying “Does she know how many bacteria can grow in your fridge without knowing it” and “Food also has a refrigeration taste when left uncovered.”

Heintzelman assured that she thoroughly cleaned the drawer beforehand and the refrigeration didn’t affect the taste.

“It tasted like pie still. It’s not like it was there for days, you know what I mean?” she said.

The official Instagram handle for Scotch-Brite even commented with “I feel like you’ll need me later,” referencing its line of scouring sponges, but Heintzelman said cleanup was easy as pie.

“It was super easy to clean, for real. I thought it would be more annoying, but it was fine,” she said.

Others didn’t like the fact that she used her hands to mix, with comments such as “Why put your dirty hands all over that pie?”

Heintzelman has this to say to those who think using her hands to cook is unsanitary.

“I washed my hands, you guys, how do you cook at your house? Do you all wear rubber gloves when you cook for everybody? That can’t be true.”

Some said it confirmed their decision to eat at home on Thanksgiving.

“That’s why I do not do potlucks,” one quipped, while another added, “This is why you can’t eat at just anyone’s house. People are nasty!!”
