Eaton Fire survivors marry inside their partially rebuilt Altadena home

ALTADENA, Calif. () — After losing their home in the Eaton Fire, Morgan Soloway and Kenny Rotter chose an unconventional setting for their wedding: their partially rebuilt house where they hope to create new memories.

“It was definitely more amazing than I could have pictured,” Soloway said.

The couple exchanged vows earlier this month during an outdoor ceremony at their Altadena home, which remains under construction.

The wedding took place about 18 months after the fire destroyed the home they had purchased just nine months earlier.

“It was Wednesday morning. I think we got a text from a neighbor who was trying to save as much as they could and they were like, ‘Yeah, your house is gone,'” Rotter said.

Although the couple remains months away from moving back into the house, they said they wanted a fresh start and an opportunity to create positive memories at a place tied to so much loss.

“Yes, we’ve gone through something traumatic, but I don’t want that to define us or to define our home, and so this was a great way to write happy memories over tragic ones,” Rotter said.

“It was really meaningful to bring all that love to this place as it’s coming up again,” Soloway said.

About 130 family members and friends attended the wedding. Instead of signing a traditional wedding book, attendees signed the frame of the house, specifically the door frame the couple will walk through every day once they move in.

The home is not expected to be move-in ready until early next year. But the newlyweds remain optimistic that by their first anniversary, they will finally be living in the house that served as their wedding venue.

Rotter said he loves the idea that every time they enter their home, they will walk through the well wishes and love of family and friends who signed the door frame.
