Don’t get robbed by retail memberships — here’s how to get your money’s worth

Consumers are scrutinizing where their money goes more than ever.

From gas prices to grocery bills, inflationary pressures have pushed shoppers to hunt for savings — and one of the smartest places to find value is in membership programs.

Whether you’re a frequent traveler, grocery shopper or someone who simply values convenience, memberships can deliver benefits that far outweigh their membership price — if you know how to leverage them.

Consumer experts say the best programs are those that align with your existing spending habits rather than encourage additional purchases.

“Loyalty programs are often one of the most valuable perks of a retail membership, and the most popular ones reveal fascinating insights into consumer psychology,” said Chris Beer, senior data journalist at consumer insights company GWI.

However, it’s important to read the membership fine print, as program benefits can be removed or changed.

Before enrolling, read through the membership’s details to learn if points expire after a certain date or if there are hidden fees, so you know exactly what you’re signing up for.

Consumer behavior research shows that bundling perks can reduce overall expenses while enhancing lifestyle options.

As many household budgets continue to tighten, some families are choosing to invest in memberships that consolidate features and savings into a single plan rather than paying separately for individual services. One study on retail membership programs found that many shoppers hold multiple memberships because of the tangible savings and convenience they unlock, with “81% of respondents reporting two or more paid retail memberships.”

How to maximize value from popular memberships

For consumers already considering a paid membership, understanding which benefits provide tangible savings — and which are unlikely to be used — can help determine whether the annual fee is worthwhile. Here’s a closer look at several popular membership programs and the perks that may offer the greatest value.

Amazon Prime

Amazon
Amazon

Membership: $14.99/month or $139/year | Free Trial: Yes, 30-day free trial

Perhaps the most popular membership, with more than 200 million subscribers as of Oct. 2025, is Amazon Prime. It combines fast shipping with digital perks like Prime Video, music access and shopping events where members enjoy exclusive discounts.

Members can also save on prescriptions through Amazon Pharmacy, including the optional RxPass program for eligible generics, and unlock exclusive discounts at Whole Foods Market by linking their Prime account in the Whole Foods app or entering their associated phone number at checkout.

Time your sign-up for Amazon Prime around major sales like Prime Day or the holidays to maximize free shipping and deep discounts. Prime membership also includes perks like complimentary Grubhub+ (activate it by linking your Grubhub account in your Prime benefits dashboard) and access to Prime Reading through the Kindle or Books section — no extra subscription required.

Costco, Sam’s Club and BJ’s

Sam’s Club

Club Membership: $50 to $60/year | Plus Membership: $110/year | Free Trial: No

While many shoppers join Sam’s Club for bulk groceries and household essentials, the membership includes a range of lesser-known benefits.

Members can receive discounts on prescription medications through the Sam’s Club Pharmacy, while optical centers offer savings on eye exams and glasses. Tire purchases include free installation, rotation and balance, and members can access discounted travel bookings on hotels, rental cars and vacation packages.

Sam’s Club Plus members also receive additional perks, including 2% Sam’s Cash on qualifying purchases (up to annual limits), free shipping on many online orders and early access to select shopping hours.

BJ’s Wholesale Club

Membership: $60/year | Executive Membership: $110/year | Free Trial: No

BJ’s stands out among warehouse clubs because it allows shoppers to combine manufacturer coupons with BJ’s own digital coupons, creating opportunities for deeper savings.

Members also receive discounted fuel at BJ’s Gas locations and can access savings through BJ’s Travel and home services programs.

Higher-tier Club+ members earn 2% back in rewards on most qualifying purchases, which can significantly offset membership costs for households that shop there regularly.

Costco

Gold Star Membership: $60/year | Executive Membership: $120/year | Free Trial: No

For frequent shoppers, Costco’s Executive Membership is often viewed as one of the strongest warehouse club value propositions. Executive members earn an annual 2% reward on eligible Costco purchases, up to a set cap, and gain access to additional member savings and promotions throughout the year.

Beyond the rewards program, many members cite Costco’s discounted gas stations, competitive pricing on prescription drugs, travel packages and optical services as reasons the membership pays for itself.

Households that spend heavily at Costco can often recoup much or all of the Executive upgrade fee through rewards alone.

Instacart+

Instacart
Instacart

Membership: $9.99 to $14.99/month | Free Trial: Yes, 30-day free trial

Instacart+ offers perks beyond simple grocery delivery.

With Instacart+, members don’t just enjoy $0 delivery fees on eligible orders but also receive reduced service fees, credit back for pickup orders and exclusive promotions at retailers like Costco and ALDI, in some cases, even without store-specific memberships.

There’s also a convenient family account feature that lets multiple household members share one membership.

If you want to double down on your memberships and credit card perks, Instacart+ also gives a $20 monthly Instacart credit for eligible Chase Ink Card holders and an up-to-$20 credit for eligible Chase United Card. That’s not all, though; MasterCard members receive three months of Instacart+ and a $10 monthly credit, along with $20 off your Instacart+ membership renewal with Costco.

Members also receive Peacock at no extra cost and a year of New York Times Cooking.

Thrive Market

Thrive Market
Thrive Market

Membership: $9.99/month or $59.95/year | Free Trial: Yes, 30-day free trial

Thrive members also receive gifts, early access to new products and a price-match guarantee — plus every paid membership helps fund a free membership for a low-income family, adding a social impact component to everyday shopping.

AARP

AARP

Membership: $16/year (first-year discount is often $12) | Free Trial: No

An AARP membership offers access to hundreds of discounts aimed at adults 50 and older. Among the most popular are savings on hotel stays through major travel brands, discounts on select wireless phone plans, reduced rates on car rentals and savings on prescription medications through affiliated programs.

Members also gain access to retirement planning tools, financial resources, fraud prevention information and educational content designed to help navigate everyday financial decisions.

AAA
AAA

Classic Membership: $64.99/year | Plus Membership: $99.99/year | Premier Membership: $124.99/year | Free Trial: No

Although best known for roadside assistance, AAA membership benefits extend far beyond emergency vehicle services. Depending on the membership tier and region, members may receive towing, battery service, lockout assistance and emergency fuel delivery.

AAA also offers trip-planning resources, travel discounts on hotels and rental cars, and savings at a wide range of retailers, restaurants and entertainment venues.

For drivers who frequently travel by car, the potential cost of a single tow or roadside service call can exceed a year’s membership fee, making the coverage a valuable form of protection.

Walmart+

Walmart+
Walmart

Walmart+: $98/year | Free trial: Yes, 30-day free trial

Walmart+ is Walmart’s paid membership program that costs $98 per year (about $8.17/month) after an optional trial, with discounted rates available for eligible students and government assistance recipients (about $49/year) and a 30‑day free trial in some promotions.

For that price, members get benefits like free same‑day grocery delivery on orders over a minimum amount, free shipping with no order minimum on many Walmart.com purchases and fuel savings at participating stations.

Walmart+ also includes a “Video Streaming Choice” perk that lets you pick one ad‑supported streaming service — Paramount+ Essential or Peacock Premium — at no extra cost (and switch between them every 90 days). This combination of grocery, shopping, fuel and entertainment benefits aims to provide everyday value for frequent Walmart shoppers.

Nordstrom

Nordstrom credit card holders receive early entry to the Anniversary Sale and bonus points on purchases, plus discounts at Nordstrom Rack. Members also receive seasonal offers and birthday rewards, adding hidden value beyond the visible perks.

The AMC Theatres Stubs A-List rewards moviegoers with free screenings and concession discounts. There’s a free tier available (AMC Stubs Insider), a $15 annual membership (AMC Stubs Premiere) and a $19.95 to $25 monthly membership (AMC A-List; price varies by market).

Uber
Uber

Uber One: $9.99/month or $96/year | Free trial: Yes, one month (longer periods with select credit cards)

Uber One bundles ride credits, delivery perks and savings across Uber services. This is ideal if you use rideshare and food delivery regularly. Some credit cards — like the Apple Card — offer 6-month free trials for Uber One.

USAA
USAA

Classic Membership: No fee, but eligibility is limited to military members, veterans and their families

For military members and their families, USAA memberships come with banking perks, insurance discounts and personalized financial tools,  often saving members hundreds annually.

How to decide which memberships are right for you

Not all memberships are created equal — and many consumers are experiencing “subscription fatigue,” with data showing that American adults spend an average of $91 per month on subscriptions. The result? People often forget about unused services that still auto-renew.

To make the most of your memberships:

  • Audit your current programs: Cancel ones you don’t actively use.
  • Calculate true savings: Compare the cost of benefits with what you’d pay without the membership.
  • Time your renewals: Consider promotional rates or bundled deals around major shopping events.
  • Leverage all perks: Don’t let digital or secondary benefits (like free content or partner discounts) go unused.

From retail discounts to travel perks, the key to getting the most from your memberships is intentional use. Understand the pricing, use the perks and maximize every benefit included in the plan to get the most out of your dollar.

With the right approach, memberships can transform recurring costs into consistent value.
