Disney World’s latest new feature is getting trashed.
Walt Disney World is rolling out a new generation of high-tech, solar-powered garbage cans across its Florida resort, the seemingly innocuous upgrade has sparked a heated backlash from Disney fans are fired up over the switch.
The new “smart” bins are gradually replacing the familiar, flat-topped cans that have dotted Disney World for decades, with the rollout reaching the resort’s four theme parks, water parks, and Disney Springs, according to a statement.
Disney reportedly says the souped-up receptacles can hold more garbage, automatically compact waste, and alert cast members when they’re getting full — theoretically meaning fewer overflowing bins and fewer trips to empty them.
But for some Disney diehards, the cans were more than a place to dump half-eaten pretzels. Their famously flat tops have doubled as unofficial tables, particularly during EPCOT’s popular food and drink festivals. The new bins have curved tops, making them less convenient to balances plates of food and drinks.
“Yes i know there’s bigger issues in the world. but it just baffles me how modern Disney can f—k up something as simple as the trash can,” one disgruntled redditor wrote.
“Eating on top of a trash can at EPCOT during a festival is basically a rite of passage,” a disappointed fan wrote on a TikTok video. “Not glamorous. But PRACTICAL.”
The conversation spread to Instagram, with people commenting: “Where am I supposed to EAT?!”
The new bins can be opened by pulling open the chute by hand, or by pressing on the foot pedal for hands free disposal.
“Same magic. Smarter can,” Walt Disney World Cast and Community declared in a video on Facebook. “These next generation Disney trash cans are designed to support the incredible work cast members do every day, helping keep the parks sparkling and ready for unforgettable memories.”
The garbage cans have become a surprisingly cherished piece of Disney World history over the years. Their cult following spawned merchandise inspired by the cans, and original trash cans have become highly coveted items at auction, selling for thousands of dollars.
