FULLERTON, Calif. () — Authorities are continuing to investigate the death of an 18-year-old Cal State Fullerton student who was dropped off unresponsive at a local emergency department last Sunday morning after attending an off-campus fraternity gathering.
Fullerton police said Anthony Blas of Whittier was unresponsive when he was taken to the hospital and was later pronounced dead. Blas’ family said he had been pledging at a fraternity house near the university.
According to the family, the freshman learned Saturday morning that he had been accepted into the fraternity and was asked to return to the house that night to celebrate.
As the investigation continued this week, movers were seen outside of the house north of the Cal State Fullerton campus where Blas had reportedly been pledging.
“It’s just, you know, another horrifically sad case,” said attorney Jon Fazzola with the Fierberg National Law Group. He has represented families of students who died while pledging fraternities and sororities.
Fazzola previously represented the family of Bea Castro, a Cal State Fullerton freshman who died in 2019.
“We represented the family of Bea Castro. Bea was a freshman at Cal State Fullerton in March of 2019 when she was brought to the hospital unconscious,” Fazzola said.
He said in Castro’s case nobody from the house called 911. It didn’t happen in Blas’ case either.
“Which is why when I saw the statement from law enforcement that no foul play was suspected in this case, I was in shock,” Fazzola said.
Police said alcohol consumption appears to have contributed to Blas’ death. Investigators have said hazing is not considered a factor at this time and that no foul play is suspected.
California State University Fullerton has said the fraternity involved was off campus and police confirmed it was unaffiliated with the university. The family and students interviewed identified the fraternity as Delta Chi.
According to the university’s website, Delta Chi’s recognition was revoked effective April 2021 through at least January 2029. The university cites numerous violations, including alcohol and illegal drug violations and hazing.
“The school is limited in what it can do in terms of how young men can organize and what associations they can have, but they can absolutely be warning parents, be warning students about the unique differences between a non-affiliated, unrecognized fraternity and one that’s recognized by the university or a national fraternity and they should be doing that,” Fazzola said.
In a statement, Delta Chi expressed its deepest condolences to Blas’ loved ones. It said it does not currently operate a chapter in Fullerton and has worked with the university to ensure students understand that no active chapter exists. It said Delta Chi’s chapter at CSUF was closed in 2021 and has not been recognized, chartered, or authorized since that time.
The fraternity said it has “consistently communicated that any individual or group purporting to operate as Delta Chi at the university does so without the authorization, recognition, oversight, or support of The Delta Chi Fraternity.”
“We fully support a thorough and transparent review of the facts by the appropriate authorities. Anthony’s family deserves answers, and all those affected deserve a complete understanding of the circumstances surrounding this tragedy,” the statement read.
The Greek letters that were previously displayed on the side of the house in Fullerton have been removed in recent days. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
