Daveigh Chase’s former manager is casting doubts on the legitimacy of the GoFundMe page set up by her boyfriend, Roy Hernandez, in the wake of the actress’ death.
“A man claiming to be Daveigh’s boyfriend has launched a GoFundMe page purportedly on behalf of Daveigh and her family. Neither her family nor her close friends know who this person is,” John Ryan told TMZ on Thursday, June 18.
He added, “I can confirm Daveigh has a SAG trust account with more than enough funds to cover all medical and related expenses.”
Chase’s former manager urged fans not to donate to the GoFundMe page “until the organizer’s identity and claims can be verified.”
Hernandez confirmed to TMZ on Wednesday, June 17, that the Lilo & Stitch star died the day prior. According to Hernandez, Chase had meningitis and an infection in her blood that caused sepsis. She was 35.
In the days leading up to her death, Hernandez created a GoFundMe titled, “Help Daveigh Chase Find Comfort & Peace.”
“After a difficult childhood and a painful falling out with her family, Daveigh was bullied and struggled to find safety and happiness in downtown L.A.,” the page read. “When we met, I promised to protect her and give her the love and comfort she deserved. Together, we found moments of happiness and hope.”
Hernandez continued, “Recently, everything changed. Daveigh was diagnosed with meningitis and several serious blood infections. Her condition has become critical, and the doctors have told me she may not have much time left. All she ever wanted was a place where we could live together, feel safe, and be happy. Now, more than ever, I want to give her that sense of home and peace in her final days.”
Hernandez noted that he would be “grateful for anything,” even if fans can only offer their prayers.
Hernandez has not shared any additional updates following Chase’s death. The fundraiser has received just over $4,000 out of the $5,500 asked as of publication.
Hernandez told TMZ that it is “100 percent” false to say the GoFundMe is illegitimate, noting that he plans to use the funds to give Chase a “proper memorial.”
Chase rose to fame in the early 2000s as the voice of Lilo in Disney’s Lilo & Stitch and Chihiro Ogino in Spirited Away. She also starred as Samara in The Ring, a role that earned her the Best Villain award at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards.
“I just want to say, ‘Everyone will suffer,’” Chase, then 12, said in her acceptance speech at the time, channeling Samara’s famous demonic voice.
Chase took a step back from acting following her appearance in American Romance in 2016.
“I just want to make something that I love and people will respect,” she previously told Interview in 2009. “I want to do things that will change someone’s life, not something they’ll forget about tomorrow.”
