California deli with cult-favorite Italian sandwiches to shutter after 46 years

Say arrivederci to yet another San Francisco institution.

Corsagna Deli, an old-school, family-run Italian staple that has fed generations of Cow Hollow locals, is calling it quits after nearly half a century — with its owner lamenting that customers would rather line up for the latest overpriced food fad.

The pint-sized Union St. institution will serve its final sandwiches on Oct. 2, according to a social media announcement posted by the business.

Corsagna’s closure is the latest on a list of sad departures from the City by the Bay — Fisherman’s Wharf, once a top tourist attraction in the city, is reeling from the latest news that the Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum will soon shutter, after six decades. Downtown, long-running dim sum palace Yank Sing will soon depart their flagship location.

Angie Denardo, the manager at Corsagna, lamented the growing trend towards caring more about viral hype than old-fashioned quality and authenticity — which some believe may have helped squeeze out the neighborhood spot.

“Waiting in line for an overpriced item is trendy,” Denardo, whose family has owned the shop for generations, told SFGATE. “I don’t know if people really value small family spaces anymore. Now it’s more about trends.”

For 46 years, the counter served up beloved staples like the “Mr. Italiana” — a stack of salami, coppa, mortadella, and provolone — alongside Dutch crunch rolls, hot pesto paninis, and classic deli sides.

Customers are able to grab their food to go or eat at a handful of bright red tables outside.

“We are so grateful for the many years you allowed us to serve you, share conversations, and be a small part of your lives our community,” the farewell post on Instagram read. “Thank you for every visit, every conversation, and all the memories. We will truly miss you.”

Dutch-crushed fans lined up virtually to show their appreciation for the neighborhood mainstay — which survived decades of tumultous change in one of the world’s most expensive cities.

“I used to have a flower shop down the street from here and I loved coming here for lunch,” the former owner of another shuttered local business said on social media. “You will be missed!”

“So sad to see,” said another fan, “But grateful for the great sandwiches over the years.”

In addition to a changing clientele, rising operating costs and a slowing business eventually caught up with the tiny shop.

“The kids went away to college, the economy changed, our clientele has shifted, and so everything just kind of created this little perfect storm of the universe being like, ‘OK, maybe now is a good time to say goodbye,’” Denardo told SFGATE.

Corsagna’s roots run deep in Cow Hollow. In the 1970’s, Denardo’s grandfather, Egidio Giampaoli, launched an Italian bakery in the storefront.

By 1980, Denardo’s mother took the reins and pivoted towards sandwiches, after noticing a demand.

Denardo recalled practically growing up there with her sister, before ultimately stepping in to run the show as an adult.

“I was 10 months old when my mom opened, so it’s incredibly emotional,” Denardo told the outlet.

The deli will host a farewell sendoff on Oct. 2 — inviting customers to say goodbye with drinks and light bites.
