California beach shack named one of America’s best waterfront eats

A tiny Central Coast seafood shack is making some seriously big waves.

Mersea’s, the laid-back eatery perched on Harford Pier in Avila Beach, has landed the No. 4 spot on Time Out’s newly released list of America’s best waterfront restaurants — proving you don’t need a fancy tasting menu to reel in national acclaim.

The coastal favorite beat out seaside spots across the country, with only restaurants in Rhode Island, South Carolina and Florida ranking higher.

“Not every great waterfront restaurant needs white tablecloths or a dress code, and Mersea’s is proof,” the outlet wrote of the Cali gem.

The publication praised the restaurant’s “refreshingly laid-back, come-as-you-are atmosphere,” where diners settle into wooden booths overlooking the water while “fishing boats, sea otters and barking seals drift in and out of view throughout the day.”

The menu is equally unfussy.

Mersea’s signature clam chowder was singled out — served New England or Manhattan-style in a sourdough bread bowl — along with its fish tacos, fish and chips and other seafood comfort-food staples.

According to its website, the pier-side favorite also dishes up shrimp cocktails, oysters, crab cakes, steamer clams, burgers, sandwiches, fresh salads loaded with seafood, garlic bread and Alaskan cod and chips, alongside beer, cocktails and sweeping ocean views.

Adding to the easygoing vibe, the restaurant frequently hosts live music performances, giving diners another reason to linger after polishing off a basket of fish and chips.

Located at 3985 Avila Beach Drive on Harford Pier, the restaurant doesn’t take reservations — it’s first come, first served.

Its name even carries a fitting coastal meaning: “Mersea” translates to “Island Oasis” in Old English.

The Avila Beach favorite was California’s only representative on the list, sharing the spotlight with waterfront favorites stretching from the East Coast to the Aloha State — and even Alaska.

Mersea’s landed at No. 4, making it the only California restaurant to earn a spot on Time Out’s top 10.

The ranking was topped by Coast in Watch Hill, Rhode Island, followed by Saltus River Grill in Beaufort, South Carolina, and Joia Beach in Miami, while Gigi’s in Montauk, New York; Shore Club Chicago; Local Ocean Seafoods in Newport, Oregon; Stars in St. Michaels, Maryland; Mama’s Fish House in Paia, Hawaii; and The Saltry in Halibut Cove, Alaska rounded out the list.

For Californians craving a meal with a view, it turns out one of America’s best waterfront bites has been hiding in plain sight — right at the end of a pier.

Mersea’s latest accolade adds to a banner year for the state’s acclaimed food scene.

As The Post previously reported, the Bear Flag State dominated Robb Report’s list of America’s 10 best new restaurants for 2026, claiming four spots — including No. 1. 

Tiny Carlsbad tasting-menu destination Lilo took the top honor, while San Francisco’s Wolfsbane and The Happy Crane, along with Los Angeles newcomer Lielle, also made the coveted ranking.

The largest state on the West Coast also made a strong showing on this year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants list.

Nine of its restaurants earned spots — including San Francisco’s Saison (No. 22), Los Angeles’ Holbox (No. 26) and San Diego’s Addison by William Bradley (No. 31).

Now, California can add one more bragging right to its culinary résumé: one of the nation’s best waterfront restaurants is hiding at the end of an unassuming pier.
