PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLS) — Two people were killed and eight others were critically injured in a Brown University shooting on Saturday afternoon, and a manhunt is underway for the suspect, officials said during a press conference.
No arrests have been made, and a shelter-in-place order is in effect for the “greater vicinity” of the Providence, Rhode Island authorities said. Officials described the suspect as a male dressed in black.
Multiple people have been shot in an active shooter situation near Brown University buildings on Saturday afternoon, and no one is in custody, officials said.
Authorities also said they are still searching the area for possible additional victims.
A statement from the school says its officials became aware of the shooting near the Barus & Holley Engineering building at 4:22 p.m.
The school’s first BrownUAlert, sent shortly after, directed students to shelter and avoid the area.
School officials, in another alert, and President Donald Trump, in a social media post, initially said a suspect was in custody, but later clarified that no one is in custody.
A statement from the university said a report of a secondary shooting near Governor Street was unfounded.
The alerts directed students to “Lock doors, silence phones and stay stay hidden until further notice. Remember: RUN, if you are in the affected location, evacuate safely if you can; HIDE, if evacuation is not possible, take cover; FIGHT, as a last resort, take action to protect yourself. Stay tuned for further safety information.”
A statement from the school, reads, in part, “We are very sorry to share that we have confirmed reports of multiple shooting victims, but we do not yet have information about their condition that we are in a position to share. They have been transported to local hospitals.”
Trump said the FBI is on the scene.
Emergency medical services are also on the scene.
Providence police instructed the public to shelter in place or avoid the area until further notice.
Authorities did not immediately provide further information.
