LOS ANGELES () — Some residents in Boyle Heights have been dealing with the stench of rotting food for nearly two and a half months, and regulators say the violations and citations tied to a burned-out Lineage Logistics warehouse continue to mount.
Lineage told Eyewitness News it has “nothing additional to share” on Friday when asked how much longer the cleanup will last. But public records show the company is facing enforcement actions from multiple agencies.
The South Coast Air Quality Management District has issued 38 violations against Lineage, including one filed Tuesday citing “air contaminants which cause nuisance.” According to AQMD, those violations could lead to tens of thousands of dollars in fines.
A new inspection report filed Thursday by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health shows crews have made progress clearing out rotting food inside the warehouse. The report includes two photos documenting the cleanup. But because of conditions leading to the breeding of flies, the Health Department says it has hit Lineage with more than 30 citations, resulting in roughly $60,000 in penalties.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass told 7 On Your Side today that “at every turn, Lineage has failed to meet its responsibility… We still cannot get clear answers, and we cannot take them at their word.”
Footage from AIR7 on Friday showed crews continuing what has become a lengthy cleanup effort. Last week, Lineage said 90% of food waste had been removed from what it called “Freezer 1.” Once all waste is cleared, AQMD says the company will have seven days to power wash and disinfect the warehouse.
Council District 14 says investigations by the Los Angeles Fire Department and the Department of Building and Safety into the fire remain ongoing.
