MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. () — Authorities in Central California on Thursday provided disturbing new details in the case of the infant known as “Baby Angelita,” who was found dead on the side of a road in Monterey County.
Investigators noted that it has been one of the more emotionally difficult cases they’ve worked on, involving the alleged sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl and the death of her newborn child.
According to authorities, DNA evidence shows that Baby Angelita was born to the teenage victim after she was impregnated by her father, Sergio Galvez Perez.
The father was arrested in Mexico after he fled there with the 14-year-old girl, who was found safe in that country by Mexican authorities.
At a Thursday news conference, investigators revealed how they believe the infant died on Aug. 1 in Moss Landing – likely run over by a car that was driven by the teen mother.
“Several feet from Baby Angelita was what appeared to be a large blood stain, which led detectives to believe that Baby Angelita was moved from where she was born to a location under a vehicle that ended up running her over,” said Detective Richard Geng of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said at a news conference.
No evidence of the father’s involvement in the baby’s death has been found, Geng added.
The mother of the 14-year-old has also been arrested.
No formal charges have yet been filed in the case.
