VICTORVILLE, Calif. () — An Apple Valley resident has been charged with two counts of murder in the street racing crash that killed two high school seniors, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.
The violent multi-vehicle crash happened on Aug. 14 in Victorville. A yellow Chevrolet Camaro and a black Dodge Charger were speeding when there was a collision with an Acura that the two teens were in near Ridgecrest Road and Elmwood Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to the D.A.’s Office, 50-year-old Terry Lamar Easter was driving at speeds reaching 117 miles per hour when his car slammed into the Acura, causing the car to split in half.
Easter then allegedly fled the scene, abandoning his 8-year-old child who was a passenger in his vehicle, prosecutors said.
One of the victims was identified in a GoFundMe campaign as Maddalyn Dailey. Another GoFundMe identified the second victim by her first name, Isabell. The two teens were seniors at Sultana High School.
“This was not an accident. Street racing at 117 mph is a deliberate and extraordinarily dangerous choice that ended the lives of two young best friends, exposing his own 8-year-old child to that danger, and abandoning his child after the crash to flee the scene,” said District Attorney Jason Anderson in a press release.
In addition to the murder charges, Easter is also facing one count of willful cruelty to a child and one count of engaging in a motor vehicle speed contest. He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday at Victorville Superior Courthouse.
A total of five arrests were made, but at least three people cooperated with investigators and were later released.
