AI scammers target pet owners with fake pics and demands for ransom — or their fur baby dies

It’s a real cat-scam.

Scammers are holding people’s pets ransom — without even touching a hair on their heads.

There’s been a rise in swindlers using AI-altered photos of people’s missing dogs and cats to demand exorbitant sums and threatening to put down their precious pets if they don’t pay.

Bill Cosens recalled scammers using AI-generated photos of his missing dog on the operating table (pictured) during an extortion attempt in Deltona, Fla. FOX 13

In April, Florida man Bill Cosens nearly fell prey after his beagle mix, Archer, escaped from his backyard, Fox News reported. He posted about his MIA mutt on social media, after which he received a phone call from a woman claiming that his dog had been hit by a car and required $2,800 for an operation.

The huxter even sent detailed AI-generated pics of Archer on the operating table, which they’d MacGyvered using photos Cosens had uploaded. Thankfully, he caught wise to the plot after realizing the address for the alleged veterinary clinic was incorrect.

“It starts becoming pretty obvious that we’re being scammed,” said Cosens, who was reunited with his pup after a neighbor tracked him down.

Often, the scammers will pose as law enforcement or pet shelter personnel.

In a similar incident in May, a California dog owner who lost her pet received a doctored photo of her canine and a message claiming that the animal required emergency surgery at a San Jose animal shelter, AOL reported.

They said they needed money to continue treatment or the pooch would be “euthanized,” per a message by the City of San Jose Animal Care & Services.

When the owner contacted the San Jose facility, they confirmed that her pride and joy was not there.

“Scammers are using public lost pet posts and AI-generated content to create false urgency and pressure people into paying money,” shelter reps wrote.

This faux fur friend hoax is the latest in a long line of sophisticated and ever-evolving AI scams, which have involved everything from kidnapping schemes using AI voice clones to romance scammers masquerading as Brad Pitt.

In 2025, AI-assisted scams were linked to over $893 million in reported losses across more than 20,000 reports, per the FBI’s Internet Crime report.

Just like with their human counterparts, the AI dog-gelgangers are often indistinguishable from the real deal.

Cam Chauhan of Wednesbury in the UK — where this appalling scheme is also prevalent — said she received demands for a £200 ($269) Apple gift card nine months after her cat Creed went missing last year, the BBC reported.

Included was an “exact picture” of him in a garden, leading her to believe he’d been located. “I started crying, grabbed my cat bag from the garage and said, ‘let’s go get my cat back,’” she declared.

But when she tried to arrange a meeting point, the scammer refused until they were sent the dough, tipping her off to the ruse. Her cat remains at large.

In many cases, pet owners are so fearful for their safety that they’re tempted to overlook red flags.

Sarah Robinson, from Northampton, recalled getting contacted by a cybercriminal named Kherson H who claimed to have her cat Cookie two weeks after she went missing.

“It starts becoming pretty obvious that we’re being scammed,” said Cosens. FOX 13

While the digital facsimile was convincing, she got a bad feline when the man was vague about the location and “stumbled on his words.” He subsequently demanded £40,000 (nearly $54k) to return her cat and sent a money transfer link, but Robinson refused, whereupon he threatened to kill her kitty.

“It’s horrible, because you know it’s not real but you’re terrified it might be,” she lamented.

Fortunately, there are some telltale signs that someone is trying to pull the wool over a dog owner’s eyes.

One of the main giveaways? They want the payment sent online.

“If someone says the only way to pay for your pet’s treatment is with a gift card, a payment app, cryptocurrency, or a wire transfer service, you’re dealing with a scammer,” the Federal Trade Commission warned in a June PSA.

To circumvent this, online pet tracker Pawboost recommends asking for specific proof via a video of the pet or video call, preferably one that showcases a unique trait.

They also suggest arranging to meet in a public place to confirm that said person has their pet.

Another great vetting technique involves asking questions that only the pet’s finder would know, such as the type of collar or other info they wouldn’t be able to glean from an online pic.

Meanwhile, scams can be reported to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
