Michael Mann has been hospitalized following an accident at a Los Angeles gun range.
“On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann,” a rep for the director, 83, confirmed in a written statement shared with Us on Sunday, November 1. “He was treated and is being released.” (TMZ was first to report the news.)
Sources familiar with the incident told TMZ the director was “trying to holster his weapon during target practice” at “around 4pm” on Saturday, October 31, while patronizing the members-only shooting club The Range LA, resulting in The Last of the Mohicans director accidentally shooting himself. He was transported to a nearby hospital via ambulance where he was treated for subcutaneous and minor injuries.
Mann, an experienced target shooter who has been practicing for decades, is best known for his work on such beloved movies as Heat, Collateral, Manhunter, Miami Vice, Public Enemies, 20203’s Ferrari — featuring Adam Driver — and more.
He is currently working on a sequel to his hit 1995 crime classic Heat, which is scheduled to begin filming early next year, per CBS News. The director recently opened up about aging and the advancement of technology — specifically artificial intelligence — in Hollywood as he continues to maintain steady work well into his 80s.

“I don’t experiment with technology gratuitously,” Mann said during an October press conference at the Lumière Festival in Lyon, where he received the event’s honorary award for his decades of directorial work. “If I have a dramatic or aesthetic need for it, then I go deep into what I need. For example, aging and de-aging will be very important in Heat 2.”
He continued at the time, “Heat 2 is an expensive movie to make, but I believe it should be made at the proper size and scale. It’s complex… shooting in Chicago, Los Angeles, Paraguay, and possibly Singapore.”
Hollywood stars are mourning the death of Val Kilmer. The Top Gun actor died of pneumonia on Tuesday, April 1, his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer, told The New York Times. Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015 and featured in a July 2021 documentary about his life, titled Val, which showed him requiring a breathing […]
The sequel will reportedly reintroduce fans to the lives of Detective Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino), Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) and Chris Shiherlis (the late Val Kilmer) during a time that pre-dates the original. Allowing the original actors to convincingly portray their younger selves in the film means, according to Mann, the use of modern AI tools. (Kilmer died in April 2025 at the age of 65.)
“The characters of Heat are so alive to me … I know everything about these characters,” he said. “I always wanted to do more with these people but I couldn’t figure out how to do it because one’s dead at the end of Heat.”
