Californians desperate to get a Double-Double without braving In-N-Out’s famously long lines are taking to the burger black market.
The famously old-school chain doesn’t allow for the usual delivery apps, or even for advance orders, leaving fans with no choice to show up in person to feed their cravings.
But now, a growing whisper network of unofficial delivery drivers is reportedly hawking In-N-Out runs through Facebook Marketplace and other gig-work platforms — offering to fetch the cult chain’s burgers, fries and shakes for a fee.
The underground burger economy was recently uncovered by L.A. Material, which found people advertising delivery services — filling a void that the SoCal-founded institution has deliberately left open for years.
And it’s not just Facebook.
Airtasker, a marketplace where users pay people to complete odd jobs, currently has a dedicated page for In-N-Out delivery in California.
One Santa Clara customer paid $100 for two Animal Style cheeseburgers and two Animal Style fries to be delivered to their home. Another customer in Los Angeles pad $40 for In-N-Out to be delivered because they had just gotten home from surgery and couldn’t drive themselves.
The fast-food juggernaut, fiercely guarded by billionaire heiress and CEO Lynsi Snyder, has famously fought to keep its food off third-party apps and websites. In-N-Out even dragged DoorDash to court back in 2015 to block unauthorized couriers from tarnishing their gold standard of freshness.
Snyder herself recently doubled down at Pepperdine University, warning that modern delivery gimmicks destroy the chains hospitality and quality. “Part of what makes In-N-Out and the experience so special is the interaction and customer service we’re able to give,” she said.
Now, apparently, freelance burger fetchers are filling the vacuum.
Reporters at L.A. Material uncovered nearly a dozen rogue couriers on Facebook Marketplace peddling unauthorized door-to-door In-N-Out runs, recently — from Hollywood and Orange County all the way to Santa Barbara.
Their classified ads range from bizarre AI images to real burger snapshots.
Some of the sustenance smugglers are genuine side-hustlers.
“I love In-N-Out. I eat it a lot… so I said, maybe someone wants In-N-Out but they’re not able to get it,” Jesse Osorio, a 30-year-old Hollywood HVAC technician who does some 20 runs a week, told L.A. Material.
Osorio pockets a crisp $20 flat surcharge per drop-off, and the fee jumps to $30 for bigger orders.
But buying into the burger procurement ring carries the same risks as buying a second item off of an anonymous profile: theft.
When L.A. Material reporters tested the limits of the underground patty pipeline by placing their own order, things went south fast.
The reporters haggled over a delivery fee, and the seller demanded a $25 upfront deposit over Zelle.
Soon after receiving the money, the phantom courier ghosted the hungry newsroom and blocked them.
