LOS ANGELES () — There’s more bad news for the People Mover at LAX, which has been promised to address the horrific traffic at the airport.
It was supposed to open in 2023 but has been delayed multiple times and the current opening date was next month. Now it’s delayed again, an issue that’s taken center stage in the Los Angeles mayor’s race.
The People Mover, called SkyLink, is way over budget.
Los Angeles mayoral candidate Nithya Raman has blamed Mayor Karen Bass’ leadership.
Construction on the project began back in 2019, long before Bass was mayor. But many of the delays have happened on her watch, including the People Mover’s failure to be ready for when Los Angeles hosted World Cup games.
“I look forward to this being done so we can safely and efficiently move Angelenos and visitors to our world-class airport in the new year,” Bass said in a statement. “The contractors need to get this across the finish line.”
In a campaign video, Raman said that, if elected mayor, she would seek investigations by the city attorney and state attorney general into the contractor’s handling of the project.
“I’m going to make sure contractors like these never get a single dollar from the city ever again,” Raman said in the video.
The over 2-mile People Mover will connect the terminals to the new rental car lot, parking and L.A. Metro.
LAX has blamed the contractor for the delays, but said rigorous testing is required.
“… We will not compromise on these stringent safety protocols, as delivering a system that safely, dependably, and durably serves Los Angeles and our upcoming global events is our primary focus,” LAX’s statement read in part.
