WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. () — Crews in West Hollywood continued work Tuesday to repair a massive sinkhole caused by a water main break on Sunset Boulevard, focusing on filling the hole and preparing the roadway.
Officials said they hope to reopen Sunset Boulevard by the end of the week.
Workers used heavy equipment to remove damaged roadway and prepare the area for reconstruction after millions of gallons of water burst from a 110-year-old trunk line beneath Sunset Boulevard last Thursday, buckling the pavement and creating a large crater at the intersection of Sunset and Holloway Drive.
“We made a lot of progress completing our slurry backfill,” said Joe Castruita, water distribution manager for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.
According to LADWP, the sinkhole measured about 60 feet long, 40 feet wide and between 6 and 10 feet deep after the water receded. Crews used about 30 truckloads of slurry mix to backfill the hole nearly to street level.
The project remains part demolition and part reconstruction, with crews removing broken pavement while preparing the roadway for final paving.
“The crews are also now currently prepping the trench and getting it prepared for the paving,” Castruita said.
While the slurry mixture cures beneath the surface, crews from multiple agencies are conducting water quality testing and repairing other damage caused by the flooding.
Residents and workers in the area said they have watched the repairs progress throughout the week.
“I saw the cement trucks this morning on the way to work, and I thought, ‘Oh, they’re going to fill the hole.’ Then I was like there’s no way, that hole was too big for just cement, but clearly that’s what they did,” said Remi Dhillon, who lives nearby.
Downhill from the sinkhole on Palm Avenue, people continued working to remove water-damaged, mud-covered vehicles from underground garages affected by the flooding.
