8 pedestrians hit during Culver City police chase before crash at McDonald’s drive-thru

CULVER CITY, Calif. () — Eight pedestrians, including a 15-year-old, were struck by a suspect who led Culver City police on a dangerous chase, and new video shows the chaos that unfolded.

Police say it all started in downtown Los Angeles when the suspect allegedly carjacked a white Toyota Camry at knife-point. Just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, Culver City police say the suspect was involved in a hit-and-run crash near the intersection of Centinela Avenue and Washington Boulevard.

That incident injured four pedestrians, according to police. Authorities said the suspect also struck another car before fleeing the scene.

Multiple pedestrians were struck when a driver led police on a dangerous chase that ended in a crash at a Los Angeles McDonald’s drive-thru, authorities say.

“It was all unfolding very quickly and we were receiving multiple calls about the erratic driver,” said Jennifer Atenza, public information officer for the Culver City Police Department. “And thanks to the camera system, we were able to locate him.”

Culver City police say the suspect hit one person, then tried to fill up at a gas station before driving off and hitting three more pedestrians. Officers were able to find the white car and the chase ensued.

Once the pursuit was underway, the suspect driving a white car hit four other people. New video from a Culver City police shows the suspect plowing into a 19-year-old pedestrian who was crossing the street.

The victims range from 15 to 70 years old. They suffered injuries described as non-life threatening to serious.

Police say the suspect, identified as 45-year-old Juan Luis Estrada of Perris, appeared to be intentionally trying to run them over but the motive was unclear.

“Recognizing the severity of this suspect’s actions and the recklessness and the danger he was putting our community in – that was why our officers continued to engage in pursuing him…. He clearly had no regard for human life on the road,” said Atenza.

Multiple cars were also hit during the chase.

The chase ended when the suspect crashed at a McDonald’s drive-thru in Los Angeles, where officers took the driver into custody, police said. An officer was injured at the end of the chase but is in stable condition with injuries that are not life-threatening, Atenza said.

Estrada is being held in the Culver City jail. He’s now facing a long list of charges including felony hit-and-run and multiple counts of attempted murder.

An investigation is ongoing. Police are asking any witnesses to come forward.
