PASADENA, Calif. () — Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo is not mincing words as he describes his disappointment after video emerged of a police officer shooting a colleague in an incident the department described as “horseplay.”
“It’s juvenile, unacceptable behavior at the highest level on the part of these officers,” Gordo told Eyewitness News.
The incident occurred in September in the police department’s parking garage. Video released by police this week shows one officer pulling his weapon and pointing it at another officer seated in a patrol car before re-holstering it.
Investigators say the officer in the patrol car also drew his weapon, which suddenly went off, sending a bullet through the windshield and striking the other officer in the shoulder.
Police Chief Gene Harris identified the officer who shot his colleague as Roy Alatorre and said he has been fired from the department. The officer who was wounded has recovered and remains employed with the Pasadena Police Department.
“Horseplay and/or failure to adhere to safety rules and standards of professional conduct will not be tolerated,” Harris said in a video that shows the shooting. “This regretful conduct is not consistent with the expectations and service commitments of this department.”
Harris said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing and cited that as the reason the video was just released.
Gordo also expressed relief that the officers’ behavior did not result in more serious consequences.
“To the people of Pasadena, I say I’m sorry that this occurred. I’m sorry that these officers behaved this way but understand that it’s not acceptable and the chief has assured me that it’s not going to happen again,” the mayor said.
Gordo said that the criminal investigation has been turned over to the district attorney’s office for review.
