‘The Devil Wears Prada 2’: Meryl Streep explains how Miranda Priestly would navigate social media

NEW YORK — Gird your loins – “The Devil Wears Prada” is officially back!

Nearly 20 years after the original film became a cultural phenomenon, “The Devil Wears Prada 2” is set to hit theaters, reuniting its iconic cast for a long-anticipated sequel.

We sat down with stars Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway, who reprise their roles as Miranda Priestly and Andy Sachs.

When the first film premiered in 2006, social media as we know it today didn’t exist. We asked the stars to imagine how Miranda Priestly would navigate the modern digital world, specifically, whether the famously fearsome editor would have a “finsta,” or fake Instagram account.

Streep laughed at the idea but suggested Miranda wouldn’t manage it herself.

“Miranda would have several assistants following people for her,” Streep said. “She’s a tastemaker and she’s a curator of culture, pointing people in a certain direction.”

That sparked a playful moment between the cast, with entertainment reporter Joelle Garguilo suggesting Miranda might secretly keep tabs on lifestyle icon Martha Stewart.

“I want to see the two of them in a room,” Garguilo said.

“Oh, I want that too,” Hathaway added.

For Hathaway, returning to the world of “The Devil Wears Prada” wasn’t a decision taken lightly.

“It’s the rarest thing in the world to get a call that says, ‘Hey, we’re getting the band back together,'” Hathaway said. “We know it’s been 20 years, but we have a cool new sound.”

She said the cast was unanimous in believing the sequel had to justify its existence.

“If it didn’t push the boundary, if it didn’t bring us somewhere new, just let it be,” she said.

Streep emphasized that no one felt obligated to return, “We didn’t have to [come back].”

Ultimately, she said, the sequel delivers what made the original so beloved while expanding its message.

“To deliver that kind of love of human creativity and everything it is, demonstrated in fashion and great writing and art and all the things that Runway is trying to uphold, I think that’s why we did it,” Streep said.

And Hathaway’s final description of the film summed it up best: “It’s a warm hug in stiletto shoes.”

“”The Devil Wears Prada” 2″ hits theaters May 1.
