Man shot while walking with wife, baby in West Hollywood; suspect still sought

WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. () — Residents of West Hollywood are on edge after a man out for a walk with his wife and baby was shot early Tuesday afternoon. It’s the second shooting to happen in the neighborhood in less than a week.

Investigators spent several hours at the crime scene throughout the afternoon and evening. They said it’s still not clear if the shooting was a random act of violence or if the man was targeted.

Video shows a woman seen clutching her baby and screaming for help after Tuesday’s shooting.

A nearby resident recorded the chaotic scene on Norton Avenue — just off Fairfax Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard — after hearing gunfire just after 12 p.m.

According to witnesses, the victim was walking down the street with his wife and child when the shooting happened. Investigators said an unknown number of rounds were fired.

“I heard a gunshot, and I ran to the window. Before I got to the window, I could hear somebody running, people screaming, and somebody got into a car. The car sped off,” said witness William Luduena.

“A huge cannon sound went off, and screaming from the young lady,” said Dale Turner.

Turner and other neighbors ran to assist the woman’s wounded husband on the sidewalk.

“I saw the young man down. Had a gunshot to his legs. It looked like it pierced both legs,” Turner recalled.

Paramedics arrived quickly, treating the victim at the scene and then rushing him to a hospital. Officials say he’s in stable condition.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies rushed to the area and shut down several streets. Detectives spent several hours combing the neighborhood for evidence and information that might help them track down the shooter.

Longtime residents say they normally feel safe in the community.

“This is a nice neighborhood, but you never know, every once in a while, bad stuff happens here too,” Luduena said.

“It’s kind of crazy, you know? To think it could happen anywhere. Like, this is West Hollywood. It’s usually a pretty safe place,” said neighbor John Thome.

Another shooting was reported in the same general area last week, though it’s unknown if it’s connected to Tuesday’s incident.

On Thursday, April 9, a person was shot while on their balcony in the 1000 block of N. Vista Street. At last check, the suspect was still outstanding.

Anyone with information regarding the investigation is asked to contact the West Hollywood Station detectives at 310-855-8850.
