LOS ANGELES () — Los Angeles Councilmember Nithya Raman on Saturday announced her candidacy for mayor of L.A., hours before a filing deadline at noon.
Raman was seen walking into the city clerk’s office in downtown just before 9 a.m. Shortly afterward, a spokesperson for the councilmember confirmed to 7 that she will challenge incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the election.
“I have deep respect for Mayor Bass. We’ve worked closely together on my biggest priorities and her biggest priorities, and there’s significant alignment there,” Raman told the Los Angeles Times in an interview. “But over the last few months in particular, I’ve really begun to feel like unless we have some big changes in how we do things in Los Angeles, that the things we count on are not going to function anymore.”

Raman is expected to deliver additional remarks to the media sometime Saturday morning.
On Friday night, L.A. County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath ended weeks of speculation about a potential run after announcing she would, instead, focus on her campaign for a second term on the board of supervisors.
Horvath’s announcement came the day before the deadline to file a declaration of intention to be a candidate in the mayor’s race in the June 2 primary. She was the third potential candidate in two days to say they won’t be challenging Bass.
On Thursday, former L.A. Unified School District Superintendent Austin Beutner and billionaire developer Rick Caruso both said they also wouldn’t be running.
