When his wife, Alice (Nicole Kidman), confesses she’s been having erotic dreams about sleeping with other men, bourgeois doctor Bill Harford (Tom Cruise) can’t take it. He embarks on a surreal two-day journey where he encounters all sorts of temptation, including an amorous daughter of a patient and a seductive sex worker. But when Bill sneaks into an underground sex party at a fancy mansion, he sees something he shouldn’t, and what started as an innocent flirtation with danger could get him and his loved ones killed.
Eyes Wide Shut is an erotic thriller on the surface, but it’s so much more than that. What else would you expect from director Stanley Kubrick, who finished this film just weeks before he died in 1999? Every scene, every frame is suffused with symbolism and meaning, and the film is heavy with context and subtext. That doesn’t mean it isn’t enjoyable or even, in some parts, funny, like when Bill interviews a very flirty gay hotel desk clerk.
As a couple experiencing marital dissatisfaction, Cruise and Kidman do some of their best work. Bill and Alice love each other, but they’re horny for new adventures, and the film concludes that maybe a little brush with death is all any couple needs to spice up their sex life.
