The 2027 Met Gala theme has been revealed.
Vogue announced on Friday, July 31, that the next Costume Institute exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City will center around storied fashion designer John Galliano’s career. (Galliano, 65, recently designed Stevie Nicks’ Zara gown for the 2026 Met Gala in May.)
“John Galliano: Horizons” marks only the third time that a living designer has been the subject of a Met exhibition following Yves Saint Laurent in 1983 and Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo in 2017.
“Every Galliano collection begins as a journey among things separated by time, place, or medium: portrait and posture, silhouette and story, memory and material,” curator Andrew Bolton, who oversees the Costume Institute exhibits, said in a press release. “‘Horizons’ approaches fashion as a form of cartography, mapping not territories but affinities, tensions, and transformations. It traces how images become ideas, ideas become material and material becomes emotion.”
He continued, “Yet a horizon reveals not only what lies before us, but also where we stand. The exhibition therefore considers both how Galliano has remapped the world through fashion and how his conduct, its consequences, and changing cultural values have reshaped our understanding of his work.”
Vogue further noted that “Horizons” will feature Galliano’s show-stopping couture garments, sketches, research books, archival materials and more to span Galliano’s years in fashion.
“There is no one more deserving of an exhibition of this scale than John Galliano,” Anna Wintour, the Global Editorial Director of Vogue, noted in a statement. “His body of work — at Dior, Givenchy, Margiela, his namesake label and more — combines erudition and creativity, darkness and light, the past, the present, the future all smashing together in a brilliant way. He’s a great designer and his career isn’t defined by a moment — something that he will live with for the rest of his life.”
Costume Institute exhibits famously debut at the annual Met Gala, held inside the NYC museum on the first Monday in May. Further details about the 2027 Met Gala have not been revealed.
