ATWATER VILLAGE, LOS ANGELES () — One person was killed and five others injured in a multi-vehicle crash Sunday morning on the 5 Freeway in the Atwater Village area, officials said.
The collision occurred at 3:18 a.m. and initially prompted the closure of all lanes on the northbound side of the freeway, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol said.
Five vehicles were involved in the pileup, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
A 25-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from a vehicle, the LAFD said. He was not immediately identified.
The five patients transported to hospitals by ambulances included a 28-year-old man in serious condition and four men in fair condition, ages 61, 35, 22 and 22.
The cause of the crash was under investigation.
One northbound lane was reopened at about 5:40 a.m.
