WATTS, LOS ANGELES () — One person was killed and another wounded in a shooting at the site of a candlelight vigil in Watts that was held for a woman who was allegedly slain by her boyfriend, authorities said.
The shooting occurred at about 2 a.m. in the area of East 104th Street and Wilmington Avenue, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said. Officer arrived to find a large crowd at the scene.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene and an injured individual was transported to a hospital in stable condition, according to the LAPD.
No one was in custody in connection with the shooting, police said. A description of a suspect was not available.
The vigil had been held in honor of 32-year-old Albertshay Russell.
Family members say Russell was shot on Monday by her boyfriend, Andre Brandley, on Santa Ana street. They say the couple lived at home with Brandley’s mom.
The mother apparently called 911 to report it as a suicide — but Russell’s family says she had wounds on her hands that show she did not harm herself.
Russell is survived by four her four children. Her family told Eyewitness News that at least one of the children witnessed Monday’s shooting.
