As if Lucy’s romance with Stephen wasn’t complicated enough, season 3 of Tell Me Lies provides another hot new love interest in the form of Costa D’Angelo‘s Alex.
Based on Carola Lovering‘s novel of the same name, Tell Me Lies follows the messy relationship between college students Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen (Jackson White). Their problematic on-and-off romance ends up lasting eight years, with everyone around them affected by Lucy and Stephen’s toxicity.
Season 2 picked up months after Stephen blindsided Lucy by ending their relationship when she was a freshman. By the end of her sophomore year, they are once again an item but in present day, fans know Stephen and Lucy are in other relationships (but still had sex in the season 2 finale).
In the third season, which premiered Tuesday, January 13, Lucy’s love life got even more complicated with the introduction of D’Angelo’s Alex who is introduced to the group via Bree’s (Cat Missal) past.
“[Lucy and Stephen] definitely share something — whatever that is and if it’s obvious or not — where they are really drawn to each other for some reason. They feel seen by each other in a really, really messed up way,” Van Patten exclusively told Us Weekly. “But it’s the only reason why this cycle is almost impossible to break.”
Van Patten concluded: “I don’t think they think that there are other people who would indulge in them like the other one does. They should not be together and it’s not healthy. But I think they do get something out of each other that’s really addicting.”

What Projects Did Costa D’Angelo Appear in Before ‘Tell Me Lies’?
Before winning Us over as Alex, D’Angelo appeared on Wog Boys Forever, Crazy Fun Park, Neighbors and The Deb. D’Angelo also filmed East of Eden, Shiver and an untitled Netflix project.
“I think I started acting when I was 12 years old. And, the way I got into it was actually was quite an interesting story,” he told the Casting Guild of Australia in 2023 about modeling before having his first audition forAngelina Jolie’s Unbroken.

Alex has been described as a psychology grad student and part-time drug dealer who has a complicated past with Bree (Missal). “Although he initially comes off as aloof and borderline rude, it quickly becomes clear that there are hidden depths to him,” read the official character description.
Has Costa D’Angelo Discussed Joining ‘Tell Me Lies’?
“This is Bree’s season and Alex is there as a tool for her to look back at her childhood,” D’Angelo teased to Us before the January 2026 premiere. “She goes back and sees all these things from a different perspective — about growing up and moving on.”
D’Angelo promised viewers would learn more about Alex’s past.
“He is coming back as a person from her childhood. It all ties up really nicely,” he hinted. “It’s a way to look back but then go forward. How do we work through this? They’ve got such a beautiful relationship as well.”
D’Angelo continued: “A lot of it is that off screen and we agreed we knew where we were [on screen]. We know Bree is so important to Alex — like the most important thing in the world — and all he wants is to protect her. So when he can’t, what does that do? It’s really tough.”
“He’s had a rough upbringing, you know, similar to Bree. They grew up together in the foster system and then they got separated. He has lived his whole life staying away from being hurt again like he was and that abandonment,” D’Angelo explained. “He sees her at school and he knows that she’s there but never approaches her. But then we finally see them come together again after all these years and what does that do to Bree and Alex and all these relationships? And he’s kind of thrown into this crazy group of people and you know for him it’s a bit of a nightmare but also beautiful moments as well.”

What Role Does Costa D’Angelo’s Alex Play in Lucy’s Season 3 Journey?
“Like every season, the boys that Lucy encounters are usually just these vessels for the projection of her relationship with Stephen,” Van Patten told RadioTimes in January 2026. “So you kind of see her learn more about herself and through this new person, it’s crazy. I can’t say too much more.”
